Cranial Navigation System

A cranial navigation system is a computer-assisted technology that maps a patient’s three-dimensional brain anatomy during neurosurgical procedures, helping clinicians relate surgical instruments to structures visible on medical images. Before or during surgery, imaging data such as magnetic resonance or computed tomography scans are registered to the patient, while an optical or electromagnetic tracker monitors instrument position and displays it within the image-based anatomy. This guidance supports planning and targeting for procedures such as tumor resection, biopsy, and electrode placement, particularly when accurate access to deep or functionally important regions is required. By improving anatomical orientation, cranial navigation can support precise decision-making while complementing, rather than replacing, surgical expertise.

Cognitive impairment resulting from the radiotherapeutic management of brain tumors represents a clinically intractable condition that adversely impacts quality of life. The capability to critically evaluate potential interventions for ameliorating radiation-induced cognitive decrements ultimately depends on the capability to undertake rigorous quantitative assessments of cognition.

Children who have complex communication needs can benefit from the use of a speech-generating device (SGD). Cognitive skills were identified as having an impact on the ability to navigate between levels of SGDs. This protocol describes the steps needed for Speech-language Pathologists to assess cognitive skills and navigational abilities.

The cranial mesenchyme undergoes dramatic morphogenic movements that likely provides a driving force for elevation of the neural folds1,2. Here we describe a simple ex vivo explant assay to characterize the cellular behaviors of the cranial mesenchyme during neurulation. This assay has numerous applications including being amenable to pharmacological manipulations and live imaging analyses.

MazeSuite is a complete toolset to prepare, present and analyze navigational and spatial experiments. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIR) is an optical brain imaging technique that enables noninvasive and portable monitoring of cerebral blood oxygenation changes. This paper summarizes collective use of MazeSuite and fNIR within a cognitive processing learning paradigm.
