Position Tracking Virtual Instrument

A Position Tracking Virtual Instrument is a software-based measurement tool that records and analyzes the location of an animal, person, or experimental object over time, making spatial behavior quantifiable in neuroscience. It receives position signals from video cameras or other sensors, converts them into spatial coordinates, and links those coordinates with time-stamped experimental events or neural recordings. Researchers use the resulting trajectories to measure locomotion, exploration, navigation, and behavioral preferences, then relate movement patterns to brain activity or experimental conditions. This approach supports reproducible behavioral analysis and helps reveal how neural circuits represent space, movement, and decision-making.

In this manuscript, we present a protocol to fracture test cadaveric proximal femora in a sideways fall on the hip configuration using instrumented fixtures mounted on a standard servo hydraulic frame. Nine digitized signals comprising forces, moments, and displacement along with two high speed video streams are acquired during testing.
