Potassium Infusion

Potassium infusion is the controlled intravenous administration of potassium to correct or prevent potassium deficiency, an electrolyte imbalance that can disrupt nerve, muscle, and cardiac function. Because potassium gradients across cell membranes help establish the resting membrane potential, restoring extracellular potassium influences neuronal excitability, action-potential propagation, and neuromuscular signaling. In neuroscience and clinical care, infusion may support patients whose electrolyte disturbances contribute to weakness, altered mental status, or impaired neuromuscular function, but it requires careful dose selection, dilution, infusion-rate control, and monitoring of serum potassium and cardiac activity to reduce the risk of dangerous hyperkalemia.

Regulation of Sodium and Potassium

2024

The regulation of sodium and potassium ion concentrations in the human body is a complex process governed primarily by hormones such as aldosterone, antidiuretic hormone (ADH), and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP). Sodium Regulation Sodium ions make up approximately 90% of extracellular cations, with a normal blood plasma concentration of 136–148 mEq/L. A decrease in blood volume and pressure triggers the release of renin from granular cells in the juxtaglomerular complex (JGC), primarily in...

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University In this experiment, three soil macronutrients are chemically extracted, combined with color-based reagents, then analyzed using color to determine the nutrient concentration present in the soil sample. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are the main components of soil fertilizer. These methods isolate each nutrient from the soil into a solution that can be analyzed using turbidity and color to determine the...
