Sinapinic Acid Matrix

Sinapinic acid matrix is a small organic compound used in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI) to analyze biological molecules, particularly proteins and peptides. The matrix is mixed with the sample and allowed to co-crystallize; when a laser irradiates the crystals, sinapinic acid absorbs the energy, assists analyte desorption, and promotes proton transfer to generate gas-phase ions for mass analysis. In neuroscience, this process supports the detection and characterization of neuropeptides, protein fragments, and other biomolecules, helping researchers investigate molecular signaling, disease-associated changes, and the biochemical composition of neural tissues.

The Citric Acid Cycle

2019

The citric acid cycle, also known as the Krebs cycle or TCA cycle, consists of several energy-generating reactions that yield one ATP molecule, three NADH molecules, one FADH2 molecule, and two CO2 molecules. Acetyl CoA is the point-of-entry into the citric acid cycle, which occurs in the inner membrane (i.e., matrix) of mitochondria in eukaryotic cells or the cytoplasm of prokaryotic cells. Prior to the citric acid cycle, pyruvate oxidation produced two acetyl CoA molecules per glucose...

Dithranol (DT; 1,8-dihydroxy-9,10-dihydroanthracen-9-one) has previously been reported as a MALDI matrix for tissue imaging of small molecules; protocols for the use of DT for the MALDI imaging of endogenous lipids on the surface of tissue sections by positive-ion MALDI-MS on an ultrahigh-resolution quadrupole-FTICR instrument are provided here.

Fabrication of Extracellular Matrix from Mouse Model: An Effective Procedure to Prepare Decellularized Tongue Extracellular Matrix from Murine Tongue

This video demonstrates the preparation of the murine tongue extracellular matrix by using the decellularization method, which involves exposing the harvested tongue to a series of physical, chemical, and enzymatic treatments. The resulting TEM scaffold retains its native extracellular matrix composition, removing the cellular components.

Polyprotic Acids

Acids are classified by the number of protons per molecule that they can give up in a reaction. Acids such as HCl, HNO3, and HCN that contain one ionizable hydrogen atom in each molecule are called monoprotic acids. Their reactions with water are: Monoprotic acids: Reactions with water HCl (aq) + H2O (l) ⟶ H3O+ (aq) + Cl− (aq) HNO3 (aq) + H2O (l) ⟶ H3O+ (aq) + NO3− (aq) HCN (aq) + H2O (l) ⇌ H3O+ (aq) + CN− (aq) Even though it contains four hydrogen...

Mixtures of Acids

The pH of a solution containing an acid can be determined using its acid dissociation constant and its initial concentration. If a solution contains two different acids, then its pH can be determined using one of several methods depending upon the relative strength of the acids and their dissociation constants. A Mixture of a Strong Acid and a Weak Acid In a mixture of a strong acid and a weak acid, the strong acid dissociates completely and becomes a source of almost all the hydronium ions...
