Space Constant Calculation

Space constant calculation is a method for quantifying how far an electrical signal spreads passively along a neuron’s membrane, making it central to understanding neural communication. In cable theory, the space constant (λ) is the distance over which a change in membrane voltage falls to about 37% of its original value; it depends on the balance between membrane resistance and the internal resistance of the neurite, commonly expressed as λ = √(rm/ri). In neuroscience, calculating λ helps predict how dendrite diameter, membrane properties, and synaptic input location influence signal attenuation, integration, and the effectiveness of neuronal processing.

Calculating the Equilibrium Constant

The equilibrium constant for a reaction is calculated from the equilibrium concentrations (or pressures) of its reactants and products. If these concentrations are known, the calculation simply involves their substitution into the Kc expression. For example, gaseous nitrogen dioxide forms dinitrogen tetroxide according to this equation: When 0.10 mol NO2 is added to a 1.0-L flask at 25 °C, the concentration changes so that at equilibrium, [NO2] = 0.016 M and [N2O4] = 0.042 M. The value of the...

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA In contrast to the production of cars or toasters, where millions of identical copies are made and extensive prototype testing is possible, each civil engineering structure is unique and very expensive to reproduce (Fig.1). Therefore, civil engineers must extensively rely on analytical modeling to design their structures. These models are simplified abstractions of reality and are used to...

Spectrophotometric Determination of an Equilibrium Constant

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Michael Evans — Georgia Institute of Technology The equilibrium constant, K, for a chemical system is the ratio of product concentrations to reactant concentrations at equilibrium, each raised to the power of their respective stoichiometric coefficients. Measurement of K involves determination of these concentrations for systems in chemical equilibrium. Reaction systems containing a single colored component can be studied spectrophotometrically. The relation between...

Constant Pressure Calorimetry

Calorimetry is a technique used to measure the amount of heat involved in a chemical or physical process or to measure the heat transferred to or from a substance. The heat is exchanged with a calibrated and insulated device called the calorimeter. Calorimetry experiments are based on the assumption that there is no heat exchange between the insulated calorimeter and the external environment. The well-insulated calorimeters prevent the transfer of heat between the calorimeter and its external...

Calculating Equilibrium Concentrations

Being able to calculate equilibrium concentrations is essential to many areas of science and technology—for example, in the formulation and dosing of pharmaceutical products. After a drug is ingested or injected, it is typically involved in several chemical equilibria that affect its ultimate concentration in the body system of interest. Knowledge of the quantitative aspects of these equilibria is required to compute a dosage amount that will solicit the desired therapeutic effect. A more...
