Equibiaxial Prestretching

Equibiaxial prestretching is a mechanical testing and material-processing technique that stretches a specimen by equal amounts in two perpendicular directions before measurement or use. A biaxial loading device applies controlled, simultaneous tension along orthogonal axes, producing an initial strain state that can alter stiffness, geometry, residual stress, and subsequent deformation behavior. This method is particularly useful for characterizing thin films, elastomers, membranes, biological tissues, and other materials whose properties depend on multiaxial loading. In physics and engineering research, equibiaxial prestretching helps model realistic operating conditions, evaluate anisotropy and nonlinear elasticity, and improve the design of flexible structures and soft-material systems.
