Latitude Longitude System

The Latitude Longitude System is a geographic coordinate framework for specifying positions on Earth, providing a common reference for mapping, navigation, and spatial measurement. Latitude measures angular distance north or south of the equator, while longitude measures angular distance east or west of the Prime Meridian; together, these coordinates locate a point on Earth’s approximately spherical surface. In physics, the system illustrates angular measurement, reference frames, and spherical geometry, and coordinates can be converted into three-dimensional position vectors when Earth’s radius is known. These principles support geophysics, satellite tracking, GPS, climate studies, and the analysis of global spatial data.

Latitudes and Departures

2025

Latitudes and departures are essential concepts in surveying, providing a systematic way to analyze the projections of traverse lines. These projections allow surveyors to interpret a line's north-south and east-west components, which are crucial for precisely calculating areas, bearings, and lengths. Latitude is the north-south projection of a line, calculated as the product of the line's length and the cosine of its bearing. Departure, conversely, is the east-west projection obtained by...

Using GIS to Investigate Urban Forestry

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Urban forests broadly include urban parks, street trees, landscaped boulevards, public gardens, river and coastal promenades, greenways, river corridors, wetlands, nature preserves, natural areas, shelterbelts of trees, and working trees at industrial brownfield sites. The history of urban trees begins with trees as landscape embellishment. Today, urban trees are seen as essential components of city infrastructure...

Combining plot analysis with trigonometric regression is a robust method for exploring complex, cyclical phenomena such as relapse onset timing in multiple sclerosis (MS). This method enabled unbiased characterisation of seasonal trends in relapse onset permitting novel inferences around the influence of seasonal variation, ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and latitude.

Cities As Interfaces of Zoonotic Hazard Emergence: Development of the New York City Tick and Wildlife Urban Surveillance System

2026

There is a critical need to monitor how ticks and their wildlife hosts respond to urbanization. This protocol outlines the steps for developing a standardized Tick and Wildlife Urban Surveillance System that will enable adaptive management in response to emerging tick-borne hazards in urban environments.
