Conflict Condition

Conflict condition is an experimental situation in which a person encounters competing cues, goals, or response tendencies that make the correct or intended response harder to select. In psychology research, conflict arises when incompatible sources of information are activated at the same time, requiring attention and cognitive control to resolve the competition, often by suppressing a prepotent response and selecting an alternative. Researchers use conflict conditions in tasks such as the Stroop and flanker paradigms to measure response inhibition, attentional control, and decision-making. Comparing performance with nonconflict conditions helps clarify how people regulate behavior under interference and how these processes change across development, disorders, or stressful circumstances.
