Process Monitoring

Process monitoring is the systematic observation and analysis of a process over time to assess stability, detect changes, and support consistent performance. In statistics, it commonly uses measurements, time-ordered data, control charts, and defined limits to distinguish natural process variation from signals of an assignable cause. When monitoring identifies unusual patterns or shifts, investigators can examine operating conditions, correct problems, and prevent defects before they spread. This approach supports quality control, manufacturing, laboratory operations, healthcare, and environmental studies, while providing evidence for process improvement, risk reduction, and data-driven decision-making.
