Carbon and nitrogen are essential for life and indicate ecological properties of environments. Carbon forms organic compounds and carbohydrates that provide energy to organisms, while nitrogen comprises nucleic acids and amino acids that serve as genetic material and protein building blocks. Measuring their amounts reveals nutrient availability and decomposition dynamics in soil and other environmental systems.
Q2: How does the C:N ratio affect decomposition rates in soil?
Different organisms require specific C:N ratios for optimal decomposition. Microorganisms in soil typically need a 24:1 ratio, but plant residues vary widely—alfalfa has 13:1 while corn has 57:1. These different ratios cause microbes to decompose plant materials at different rates and extents, directly affecting how nutrients are recycled and returned to the soil ecosystem.
Q3: What is the flash combustion technique and why is it preferred for elemental analysis?
