The Evans method uses NMR spectroscopy to measure the magnetic susceptibility of a paramagnetic compound by comparing solvent peak chemical shifts. The magnetic susceptibility relates to the magnetic moment, which is calculated in units called Bohr magnetons. By comparing the calculated magnetic moment to theoretical spin-only values, the number of unpaired electrons in the complex can be determined.

For first-row transition metal complexes, the orbital contribution to the magnetic moment is small and can be neglected, making the spin-only magnetic moment calculation accurate. However, for second and third row transition metals, both spin and orbital contributions must be considered because orbital effects are significant and can inflate the measured magnetic moment, potentially overestimating the number of unpaired electrons.

An Evans method capillary insert requires a Pasteur pipette with a melted glass bulb tip, a mixture of deuterated and protonated solvents, and a rubber septum. The sealed capillary contains the solvent mixture at a depth of about two inches with no air bubbles. This insert is placed inside an NMR tube alongside the sample solution to provide a reference peak for chemical shift comparison.

Molecular orbital theory assigns electrons to orbitals shared between atoms in a complex. Information about the number of unpaired electrons confirms that an appropriate molecular orbital model is being used and helps predict reactivity. Ligand field strength perturbs the energies of d-orbitals in transition metals, determining whether electrons pair up or remain unpaired according to Hund's rule. Strong ligand fields may cause all electrons to pair, creating diamagnetic complexes, while weak fields allow unpaired electrons, producing paramagnetic complexes.
