Q1: What is the difference between habituation and sensitization?
Habituation and sensitization are two forms of non-associative learning. Habituation occurs when a response to a stimulus decreases after repeated exposures, such as a mouse showing diminished startle to repeated loud noises. Sensitization is the opposite: an increased response to various stimuli following an intense or noxious stimulus, where the mouse becomes more reactive to all sounds after exposure to a loud, unpleasant sound.
Q2: How do operant conditioning and classical conditioning differ?
Operant conditioning uses reinforcement and punishment to alter stimulus-behavior associations, like a pigeon learning to peck a box for food rewards. Classical conditioning pairs a neutral stimulus with an intense stimulus to produce a stereotyped behavior. In fear conditioning, a mouse learns to associate a neutral tone with shock, then freezes when hearing the tone alone, demonstrating how fear conditioning classical conditioning principle works.
Q3: What are the main types of long-term memory?
Long-term memory has two subtypes: explicit or declarative memory, which includes conscious recollections like episodic memories of specific events or semantic memories of learned knowledge; and implicit or procedural memories, which are unconsciously expressed, such as motor memory for difficult motions like balancing on a balance beam.
Q4: How does sleep affect memory retention?
Research demonstrates that sleep significantly enhances memory retention. In studies comparing participants who slept after training with those who did not, the sleep group showed substantially better recall performance. This finding suggests that sleep plays a critical role in consolidating and storing learned information into long-term memory.
Q5: What brain imaging methods do scientists use to study learning and memory?
Behavioral scientists employ several non-invasive neuroimaging techniques. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) tracks blood oxygen levels as a proxy for brain activity. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) maps brain activity by recording magnetic field changes from electrical activity. Electroencephalography (EEG) uses skull electrodes to monitor electrical activity across the brain during learning and memory tasks.
Q6: How do researchers assess working memory in behavioral experiments?
Researchers use the N-back task to assess working memory, where subjects indicate whether the current image appeared n-images previously. The difficulty increases with more images between repeats, making it harder to remember. This test effectively measures short-term or working memory capacity by requiring subjects to hold and manipulate information temporarily.
Q7: Can traumatic memories be reduced or erased after formation?
Research suggests traumatic memories can be diminished through inhibitory learning protocols that create new, safe memories. In fear conditioning studies, when safe memories were created ten minutes after fear conditioning, the fear memory was successfully extinguished. This indicates there are critical time periods after an event when memories become malleable and can be modified or reduced.
