<p>Dr. Chia-Jung Li is an associate research fellow at Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan. He received his PhD from the Tzu-Chi University of Taiwan in 2015 and finished his post-doctoral training in the National Cheng-Kung University in 2017. Dr. Li has a longstanding interest in the area of molecular metabolism, particularly in understanding the functional significance of the mitochondrial biogenesis involvement in human disease. He is also the recipient of numerous awards, including the Prize Paper Award of the Taiwanese Society for Reproductive Medicine, the Best Poster Award of the Taiwan Society for Mitochondrial Research and Medicine, the Outstanding Research Award in the Taiwan Breast Cancer Foundation, the Japan and the United states international academic Travel Award, and many other awards. It is worth mentioning that his research papers are often selected as cover stories by high-impact journals. His current work includes the development of novel drugs/materials, optimizing &lsquo;bioenergetic&rsquo; features, and disease-modifying treatments that could serve as cellular protective strategies for aged-related diseases.</p>

Collection Overview

The field of mitochondrial biochemistry has developed rapidly in recent years, especially in the areas of electron transport chain, mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation and metabolomics related studies, and many milestones have been achieved. Mitochondria are the centre of cellular energy metabolism, participating in fatty acid oxidation, tricarboxylic acid cycle, electron transport chain, oxidative phosphorylation, and converting chemical energy from ingested food nutrients into the cellular universal energy carrier ATP through oxidation-reduction reactions, providing the main source of energy for the cell. However, the increased production of abnormal ROS in mitochondria and the accumulation of oxidative stress will lead to a decrease in mitochondrial quality, bioenergetic dysfunction and metabolic stress, which in turn induce many human diseases. We will create a special issue to assess mitochondrial structure, function, mtDNA, metabolism and bioinformatics methodologies to provide a framework for the practical assessment of mitochondrial quality. This collection aims to provide protocols and guidelines for the development and application of different biopsy methods. It will be of interest to researchers studying various physiological and pathological phenomena in which decreased mitochondrial quality is a contributing factor.
