Our knowledge of fetal and neonatal development, normal and pathological, depends largely on animal studies. These have been traditionally conducted over decades in multiple animal models, with choices of the models not only dictated by the considerations of comparative physiology, but also by the constraints of a given research setting and funding possibilities. On the intersection of these realities of translational research, a plethora of findings have emerged that have had a variable and often very significant impact on clinical practice in assessing fetal and neonatal development, therapeutic interventions, and developmental trajectories well into school age and adulthood; also known as the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) modeling. Perinatal models of health and disease are complex due to the unique temporal, dynamic component of the modeling and the methodological challenges of dealing with organisms that are relatively smaller or more susceptible to the subtlest of changes in the experimental design. Overall, to improve perinatal health outcomes it remains important to grow the capable research community and maintain the highest standards of reproducibility by sharing the methodological experience in greatest possible detail. It is with this mindset that I am excited to announce a broad call for contributions of manuscripts in the unique JoVE format on perinatal models of fetal development and adversity.
