Features of Isoquants

Generally, isoquants are downward-sloping from left to right and convex to the origin.

Consider a factory producing a hundred toothbrushes with two inputs: labor and machines. As more labor is added, fewer machines are needed to make the same quantity of toothbrushes, leading to a downward-sloping curve.

Initially, adding a few laborers can substitute for a significant number of machines. However, as this substitution continues, increasingly more labor is needed to replace each additional machine.

This is called the diminishing marginal rate of technical substitution, which leads to a convex isoquant.

Secondly,  isoquants for different output levels never intersect each other.

Consider two isoquants. If they were to intersect, it would imply that at the point of intersection, the factory produces two different quantities simultaneously, which is impossible.

Additionally, isoquant curves generally do not touch the axes. This signifies that at least some amount of both inputs is required to produce output.

Lastly, higher isoquants represent higher output levels. So, as one moves to isoquants further away from the origin, higher production levels are achieved.
