Private cost is the expenses a business incurs while producing a good or the price paid by an individual in purchasing a good.
For example, consider a bakery that makes cakes. The private cost for the bakery includes the ingredients like flour, sugar, and eggs, plus the wages for the workers and the electricity for the ovens. These are the costs that the bakery pays to produce cakes. When the cost of making one additional cake is considered, it is called the private marginal cost.
On the other hand, the private benefit is the gain or advantage that an individual or business receives from consuming or selling a good.
For instance, the private benefit for the bakery is the profit made from selling cakes. For consumers, the private benefit of buying the cakes is the satisfaction or utility they get from eating them. Additionally, the private marginal benefit for the bakery is the extra income earned from selling one cake.
In summary, private cost is what it costs to make or buy something, and private benefit is what one gains from selling or using it.
