Question 1

What is the difference between the normative and psychological approaches to ethical decision-making?

Accepted Answer

The normative approach sets explicit standards for ethical behavior based on honesty, fairness, and accountability, clearly distinguishing right from wrong. The psychological approach examines how individuals actually make decisions in real situations, considering personal motivations, situational influences, and cognitive biases. While normative ethics provides ideals, the psychological approach reveals the complexities and competing values that influence real-world choices.

Question 2

How do personal motivations and biases affect ethical decision-making in business?

Accepted Answer

Personal motivations and inherent biases create internal conflicts when ethical principles clash with career advancement or financial gain. The psychological approach recognizes that individuals experience tension between ideal moral behavior and practical pressures. Understanding these influences helps professionals acknowledge how self-interest and emotional factors shape decisions, enabling more conscious and principled choices aligned with core values.

Question 3

Why is balancing normative ideals with psychological insights important for ethical decision-making?

Accepted Answer

Balancing both perspectives helps professionals navigate the tension between moral behavior and real-world challenges. Integrating normative principles with psychological understanding fosters accountability, consistency, and integrity in thought and action. This integrated approach acknowledges that ethical dilemmas arise from competing values while maintaining commitment to honesty, fairness, and corporate responsibility over self-interest.

Question 4

What role does corporate responsibility play in ethical decision-making for investment professionals?

Accepted Answer

Corporate responsibility requires prioritizing ethical integrity over profit when projects pose risks to stakeholders or the environment. Investment professionals in ethics in the financial and investment industry face decisions where profitable opportunities may violate ethical principles. Maintaining professional conduct means declining projects that compromise values, even when they offer personal or organizational benefits.

Question 5

How does the normative approach guide ethical behavior in professional contexts?

Accepted Answer

The normative approach provides a clear framework emphasizing principles such as honesty, fairness, and accountability to distinguish right from wrong. It guides individuals and businesses to act based on these explicit standards, ensuring actions prioritize ethical integrity and responsibility. This perspective applies across personal and professional contexts, helping professionals uphold societal and moral standards consistently.

Question 6

What internal conflicts arise when ethical principles conflict with career advancement?

Accepted Answer

Professionals experience internal conflict when supporting profitable or career-advancing opportunities would violate ethical principles. This tension reflects the complexity of real-life decision-making, where personal ambitions compete with moral values. Recognizing these conflicts helps individuals understand how inherent biases and motivations influence choices, enabling more deliberate alignment of actions with core principles and professional conduct.

Question 7

How do situational influences and competing values complicate ethical decision-making?

Accepted Answer

Situational influences and competing values create ethical dilemmas where ideal principles may conflict with practical constraints or emotional pressures. The psychological approach highlights that real-world decisions involve multiple competing interests rather than clear-cut choices. Understanding these complexities reinforces the need for a principled approach that acknowledges human motivations while maintaining commitment to ethical standards.
