One widely used method to calculate GDP is the expenditure approach, which tracks spending across the economy. This method focuses on who is spending and what they are purchasing.
For example, when a family buys a new car for personal use or a car manufacturer purchases a robotic arm for its vehicle assembly line, these are both forms of spending included in GDP.
Such spending comes from households, businesses, government, and the rest of the world, or the foreign sector.
Economists group this spending into four main categories of expenditure. These are personal consumption expenditures or C; gross private domestic investment in physical capital, or I; government consumption and gross investment, or G; and net exports, or NX, which is the value of exports minus the value of imports.
GDP is denoted by Y, the sum of these four components.
The formula is simple. However, measuring an economy as large as the U.S. is highly complex. The Bureau of Economic Analysis compiles quarterly GDP estimates using various data sources.
