ABC analysis is a method used in inventory management to classify inventory items based on their value and importance.
It divides inventory into three categories known as A, B, and C.
Category A includes high-value items that are few in number but contribute to a large portion of the total inventory value.
Category B consists of moderate-value items, and Category C includes low-value items that are large in number but contribute little to the overall value.
For example, a retail store manages one hundred different products.
Ten products fall into Category A and contribute eighty thousand dollars per month to the store’s total monthly sales of one hundred thousand dollars. These items require strict control and regular monitoring.
Twenty products are in Category B and contribute about fifteen thousand dollars per month, requiring moderate attention.
The remaining seventy products fall into Category C, generate just five thousand dollars per month, and can be managed with minimal oversight.
By focusing on high-value items, ABC analysis helps businesses control inventory costs and improve efficiency in inventory management.
