2. Voer het onderzoek uit.

In een ideale wereld zouden onderzoekers hun studies uitvoeren in reële omgevingen waar gedrag zich vanzelf voordoet. Als je bijvoorbeeld wilt zien wat de stemgedrag van individuen beïnvloedt, zou het het beste zijn om ze te zien stemmen. Onderzoek in deze omgevingen is echter niet altijd ethisch of zelfs praktisch. Verder wil een onderzoeker misschien meer controle over de omgeving om de exacte variabelen die een resultaat beïnvloeden beter te kunnen bepalen. 
Wanneer onderzoekers hun onderzoek in een lab moeten uitvoeren, proberen ze het alledaagse realisme te optimaliseren, wat betekent dat ze er alles aan doen om het lab als een echte ervaring te laten voelen. Deze video toont een ontwerp met twee groepen dat onderzoekt hoe onderzoekers alledaags realisme in een lab gebruiken om te bepalen of positieve restaurantrecensies verband houden met het niveau van fooien van de gasten.
Psychologische studies gebruiken vaak grotere steekproeven dan studies in andere wetenschappen. Een groot aantal deelnemers helpt om ervoor te zorgen dat de bestudeerde populatie beter wordt vertegenwoordigd en dat de foutenmarge die gepaard gaat met het bestuderen van menselijk gedrag voldoende in aanmerking wordt genomen.
In deze video demonstreren we dit experiment met slechts twee deelnemers, één voor elke conditie. Zoals in de resultaten wordt weergegeven, gebruikten we echter in totaal 200 (100 voor elke conditie) deelnemers om tot de conclusies van het experiment te komen.

Gegevens werden in totaal verzameld van 200 deelnemers tijdens een andere instantie van dit onderzoek. Dit grote aantal deelnemers helpt om ervoor te zorgen dat de resultaten betrouwbaar zijn. Als dit onderzoek alleen met twee deelnemers zou zijn uitgevoerd, is het waarschijnlijk dat de resultaten veel anders zouden zijn geweest en niet representatief zouden zijn voor de grotere populatie. Onderzoek in een realistische omgeving uitvoeren is optimaal, maar helaas niet altijd ethisch of zelfs praktisch.Onderzoekers kunnen bijvoorbeeld niet zomaar een stemhokje binnenmarcheren en observeren welke factoren het stemgedrag van individuen beïnvloeden.In plaats daarvan kunnen ze realisme in het laboratorium creëren door een authentieke stemervaring te ontwerpen, die het vragen en observeren van de exacte variabelen omvat die het resultaat van het onderzoek kunnen beïnvloeden.Aan de hand van een realistische omgeving zal deze video laten zien hoe je een experiment ontwerpt, uitvoert, analyseert en interpreteert dat onderzoekt of restaurantrecensies gerelateerd zijn aan het niveau van fooien van een diner.In dit experiment is een realistische restaurantomgeving ontworpen om de onderzoeker in staat te stellen te manipuleren hoe positieve en negatieve restaurantrecensies het eetgedrag van de deelnemers beïnvloeden.Voor de groep met positieve recensies wordt de deelnemers gevraagd een recensie te lezen die de service prijst. In tegenstelling daarmee wordt de groep met negatieve recensies gevraagd een recensie te lezen die de service veroordeelt.Na het lezen van een van de recensies, wordt de deelnemers vervolgens een video getoond die een eetscenario met slechte service weergeeft en moeten ze zichzelf voorstellen als een van de dinerende gasten en de onderzoeker als de serveerster.Zodra de video voorbij is, krijgen de deelnemers een rekening voor de geïmagineerde maaltijd. De afhankelijke variabele is het bedrag dat als fooi wordt achtergelaten.Daarom wordt verondersteld dat deelnemers die de positieve recensie hebben gelezen, vergevingsgezind zijn voor de slechte service en een hogere fooi geven dan gasten die de negatieve recensie hebben gelezen.Om het onderzoek te beginnen, ontmoet de deelnemer bij de laboratoriumdeur en verwelkom hem/haar in het Hawk Villa restaurant. Begeleide alle deelnemers door het toestemmingsproces en bespreek het algemene plan voor de sessie.Nadat de deelnemer toestemming heeft gegeven voor het experiment, geef ze/hem een portemonnee met $136,10, verdeeld in specifieke biljetten en munten.Deelnemers worden willekeurig verdeeld in een van de twee experimentele groepen door ze een positieve of negatieve recensie te geven.Wanneer de deelnemers klaar zijn met het lezen van de recensies, laat ze een video bekijken die een eetscene weergeeft. Instrueer de deelnemers om zichzelf voor te stellen als de dinerende gast en de onderzoeker als de serveerster.Na het tonen van de video, keer terug naar de tafel met de rekening.Zodra de deelnemer geld in de rekeninglade legt, keer terug naar de tafel en vraag of ze/hij wisselgeld nodig heeft.Om het experiment af te sluiten, breng de deelnemer op de hoogte en leg uit waarom het simuleren van een restaurant in het lab noodzakelijk was voor het experiment.Om de gegevens te analyseren, tel eerst het geld dat elke deelnemer in de rekeninglade heeft gelegd. Trek het totaal van de rekening van $44,67 af van het bedrag dat de deelnemer heeft achtergelaten om het fooi-bedrag te berekenen. Bereken vervolgens het fooipercentage.Om de gegevens te visualiseren, stel de gemiddelde fooipercentages per groep grafisch voor. Merk op dat deelnemers in de positieve recensieconditie hoger tippten dan deelnemers in de negatieve recensieconditie.Nu u bekend bent met hoe u realisme in een laboratoriumomgeving kunt optimaliseren, laten we eens kijken hoe u deze benadering kunt toepassen op andere vormen van onderzoek.Rijsimulatoren worden vaak gebruikt in het laboratorium om veilig het rijvermogen van personen met visuele tekortkomingen of onder invloed van een stof, zoals alcohol, te onderzoeken.Daarnaast kunnen onderzoekers navigatieve vaardigheden bij personen bestuderen door de taakprestaties in een gesimuleerde realistische omgeving te onderzoeken.Ten slotte hebben onderzoekers dansbewegingen aangepast om patiënten met slechte mobiliteit en balans, zoals degenen met de ziekte van Parkinson, te betrekken en vervolgens veranderingen in motorische prestaties te monitoren.Je hebt zojuist JoVE's introductie gezien over het gebruik van realisme in laboratoriumexperimenten. Mundane realism helps lab experiments feel like real life. It is used when researchers want a setting that matches how people normally behave. In some studies, the real world is the best place to observe behavior directly. For example, voting behavior is easier to study by watching people vote. But real-world research is not always ethical or practical.

A lab gives researchers more control over the setting. That control helps them identify the exact variables that may influence an outcome. To make a lab study feel natural, researchers try to improve mundane realism. This means they make the lab experience seem as close to everyday life as possible.

This restaurant study uses a two-group design. It tests whether positive restaurant reviews are linked to how much diners tip. The setup shows how researchers can build a realistic lab situation to study a real behavior. Although the demonstration uses just two participants, one in each condition, the full study used 200 participants. That larger sample included 100 participants per condition and helped support the conclusions.
