First Law of Thermodynamics

- [Verteller] De eerste wet van de thermodynamica, energie kan niet worden gecreëerd of vernietigd, alleen omgezet, kan worden aangetoond binnen een klassiek voedselweb. Hier wordt de lichtenergie van de zon eerst door planten als stralingsenergie aangewend en vervolgens omgezet in chemische energie, opgeslagen als complexe koolhydraten. De vegetatie wordt uiteindelijk geconsumeerd door dieren.

Bij de afbraak van de suikers komt energie vrij in de vorm van warmte, deze wordt opgeslagen in macromoleculen als chemische energiereserve om later te gebruiken, of wordt doorgegeven aan een roofdier.

De Eerste Wet van de Thermodynamica stelt dat energie niet kan worden gecreëerd of vernietigd, maar alleen kan worden getransformeerd. Dit principe kan worden geïllustreerd in een klassiek voedselweb, waar lichtenergie van de zon door planten wordt benut als stralingsenergie, omgezet in chemische energie en opgeslagen in complexe koolhydraten. Planten worden vervolgens geconsumeerd door dieren, en tijdens het verteringsproces worden suikers afgebroken, waarbij energie vrijkomt in de vorm van warmte. De suikers produceren ook chemische energie, die kan worden gebruikt voor werk, opgeslagen worden in macromoleculen zoals glycogeen en vetzuren, of worden overgedragen aan een roofdier. Afvalproducten en dood organisch materiaal van dieren worden vervolgens afgebroken door bacteriën en schimmels, waardoor voedingsstoffen worden teruggebracht naar de bodem, die planten weer kunnen gebruiken om te groeien. Zo wordt de energiecyclus voortgezet.

<h4>De eerste wet van de thermodynamica</h4>

Tijdens het fotosyntheseproces worden fotonen gebruikt om complexe koolhydraten te synthetiseren, die planten gebruiken om te leven en te groeien, terwijl zuurstof wordt vrijgegeven in de atmosfeer.

Planten dienen als voedsel voor herbivoren, en tijdens het verteringsproces worden suikers afgebroken, waarbij energie vrijkomt. Deze energie kan worden omgezet in warmte, gebruikt worden voor chemische energie uit glucose om cellulaire processen aan te drijven, of opgeslagen worden als macromoleculen. Bijvoorbeeld, glycogeen kan worden opgeslagen in de lever of spieren, waar het snel kan worden gemobiliseerd bij hoge energievraag. Daarnaast kan energie worden opgeslagen als vetzuren, die als langdurige energiereserves fungeren. Wanneer een roofdier (carnivoor) een herbivoor consumeert, wordt de opgeslagen energie op een vergelijkbare manier gebruikt: voor metabole processen, werk en warmteproductie.

Afvalproducten van elke trofische stap worden teruggevoerd naar de lucht, het water of de bodem, waardoor het voedselweb in stand wordt gehouden. Afbrekers zoals bacteriën en schimmels verwerken dood organisch materiaal, brengen voedingsstoffen terug in de bodem, en maken deze beschikbaar voor planten, die de cyclus opnieuw starten.

Energy flow in a food web shows the First Law of Thermodynamics in action. Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only change form as it moves through living things and the environment.

Sunlight is the starting point. Plants capture radiant energy from the sun during photosynthesis and turn it into chemical energy stored in complex carbohydrates. At the same time, oxygen is released into the atmosphere.

Herbivores eat the plants and use those sugars during digestion. The energy is released as heat or used as chemical energy from glucose to power cellular processes that help the animal survive and reproduce. Some of that energy is also stored in macromolecules. Glycogen can be kept in the liver or muscles and used quickly when energy demand is high. Energy can also be stored as fatty acids.

That stored energy can then move to a predator, such as a carnivore, which uses it in a similar way. Waste products and dead organic matter from animals are broken down by decomposers like bacteria and fungi. The materials return to the soil, air, or water, and plants can use them again as the food web continues.
