Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems

Trophic Levels

- [Verteller] Soorten in een ecosysteem zijn georganiseerd in een voedselketen, een sequentiële volgorde waarin energie en voedingsstoffen via verschillende organismen worden doorgegeven. Elke soort in de keten vertegenwoordigt een specifieke positie die bekend staat als trofisch niveau. Het onderste niveau bestaat uit primaire producenten die autotrofen worden genoemd, organismen die de energie verkrijgen om nieuw organisch materiaal te synthetiseren uit een abiotische energiebron, zoals zonlicht.

Alle bovenstaande niveaus bestaan uit heterotrofen, die energie moeten halen uit andere organismen. Het eerste niveau van heterotrofen zijn primaire consumenten, organismen die zich rechtstreeks voeden met primaire producenten. Vervolgens halen secundaire consumenten energie uit het eten van primaire consumenten en worden ze vervolgens gegeten door tertiaire consumenten.

Organismen behoren echter niet altijd uitsluitend tot bepaalde categorieën. Bijvoorbeeld, een havik kan zowel een secundaire consument zijn, die zich voedt met zaadetende vogels, als een tertiaire consument, die zich voedt met slangen, welke zich ook kunnen voeden met de zaadetende vogels. Reducenten, waaronder schimmels, bacteriën en detritivoren, vormen het hoogste trofische niveau.

Deze organismen voeden zich met dode resten van andere organismen en kunnen overal in de voedselketen worden geplaatst.

Alle organismen in een ecosysteem bezetten een trofisch niveau in de voedselketen. Het laagste niveau bestaat uit primaire producenten, die hun voedsel synthetiseren uit zonne- of chemische energie. Elk volgend niveau krijgt energie uit de onderliggende niveaus. Detritivoren kunnen elk niveau boven primaire producenten bezetten.

<h4>Voedselketens</h4>

Binnen een ecosysteem stromen energie en voedingsstoffen door organismen in een opeenvolgende volgorde die bekend staat als een voedselketen. Elk organisme bezet een trofisch niveau of een specifieke plaats binnen die voedselketen. Het laagste trofische niveau bestaat uit autotrofe organismen. Autotrofe organismen synthetiseren hun voedsel door energie te transformeren uit chemicaliën – chemoautotrofen – of de zon – fotoautotrofen. Organismen in de volgende niveaus – heterotrofen– verkrijgen energie van andere organismen in de onderstaande niveaus. Het tweede trofische niveau omvat primaire consumenten, herbivoren, die autotrofen consumeren – primaire producenten – terwijl het derde en vierde niveau bestaan uit secundaire en tertiaire consumenten, de carnivoren.

Toproofdieren bezetten het hoogste trofische niveau van deze keten. Afbrekers, of detritivoren, meestal bacteriën of schimmels die dode organismen consumeren, kunnen op elk heterotroof niveau voorkomen en een cruciale rol spelen in de recycling van voedingsstoffen en materie in het ecosysteem. Deze organismen scheiden spijsverteringsenzymen af die organisch materiaal afbreken en omzetten in anorganische verbindingen die opnieuw kunnen worden gebruikt door primaire producenten.

<h4>Voedsel webben</h4>

Voedselketens geven niet altijd accuraat de interacties tussen soorten in een ecosysteem weer. Roofdieren en prooien kunnen op meerdere trofische niveaus voorkomen. Een voedselweb – een holistisch model waarin rekening wordt gehouden met alle interacties – kan de complexiteit van relaties in een ecosysteem beter weergeven.

Food chains show how energy and nutrients move through an ecosystem. Each organism holds a trophic level, or a specific place in that chain. The lowest level includes primary producers, which make their own food using energy from the sun or from chemicals.

Organisms at the next levels are heterotrophs, which get energy from other organisms below them. Primary consumers are herbivores, and they feed on autotrophs, also called primary producers. Secondary and tertiary consumers are carnivores that occupy the third and fourth trophic levels. Apex predators sit at the top of the chain.

Detritivores, also called decomposers, can live at any heterotrophic level. They are usually bacteria or fungi that feed on dead organisms. They release digestive enzymes that break down organic material into inorganic compounds. Primary producers can use these compounds again, so detritivores help recycle nutrients and matter in the ecosystem.

Food chains do not always show every interaction in an ecosystem. Predators and prey can be part of more than one trophic level. A food web gives a more complete picture because it includes all of these connections. It shows the complex relationships among species more clearly than a single food chain.
