What are Biogeochemical Cycles?

- [Instructeur] De materie waaruit levende organismen bestaan, wordt bewaard en gerecycleerd tussen biotische, levende en abiotische, niet-levende factoren in het milieu, een proces dat de biogeochemische kringloop wordt genoemd. Vier verbindingen, of moleculen, water, koolstof, stikstof en zwavel, hebben gasvormige vormen die gecirculeerd worden door zowel de terrestrische en aquatische ecosystemen als door de atmosfeer, waardoor ze deel uitmaken van de mondiale biogeochemische processen. Elementen die te zwaar zijn om in de vorm van gassen, zoals fosfor, alleen door de terrestrische en aquatische ecosystemen te circuleren, een lokaal biogeochemisch proces.

Zowel lokale als globale biogeochemische recyclage zijn met elkaar verbonden door geologische processen, zoals de verheffing van tektonische platen, verwering en erosie van rotsafzettingen en waterafvoer.

wat zijn biogeochemische cycli?

De meest voorkomende elementen in organische moleculen, koolstof, waterstof, zuurstof, stikstof, zwavel en fosfor, zijn slechts in beperkte hoeveelheden beschikbaar in het ecosysteem. Daarom moeten deze voedingsstoffen worden gerecycled via zowel biotische als abiotische componenten van het ecosysteem, in processen die doorgaans biogeochemische cycli worden genoemd.

<h4>Biogeochemische cycli en ontbinding</h4>

De materie waaruit levende organismen bestaan, zoals water, koolstof, stikstof, zwavel en fosfor, bestaat in beperkte hoeveelheden binnen het ecosysteem en moet worden geconserveerd en gerecycled. Deze materie kan verschillende chemische vormen aannemen en langere tijd in de atmosfeer, op of onder het land en in aquatische omgevingen verblijven. Een sleutelcomponent bij de afbraak en recycling van voedingsstoffen in het ecosysteem is de afbraak, die wordt beïnvloed door temperatuur, vocht en beschikbaarheid van voedingsstoffen. Organisch materiaal wordt bijvoorbeeld veel sneller afgebroken in regenwouden vergeleken met gematigde omgevingen, die lagere temperaturen en meer seizoensgebonden klimaten hebben.

<h4>Menselijke activiteit</h4>

Menselijke activiteiten kunnen ook een belangrijke rol spelen bij het veranderen van de balans van biogeochemische cycli. In 2011 ervoer Lake Erie bijvoorbeeld de grootste schadelijke algenbloei in zijn geschiedenis. Dit was het gevolg van de jarenlange toevoeging van fosfor in de landbouw, in combinatie met veranderingen in lokale weerpatronen. De buitensporige nutriëntenniveaus – eutrofiëring genoemd – bevorderden de groei van twee giftige cyanobacteriënsoorten, Microcystis en Anabaena.

Nutrient recycling in ecosystems keeps the elements needed for life moving through living and nonliving parts of the environment. Elements such as water, carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus are present in limited amounts, so they must be conserved and reused. These movements are called biogeochemical cycles.

These nutrients can exist in several chemical forms. They may spend long periods in the atmosphere, on land, under the land, or in aquatic environments. Decomposition is a key part of this recycling process. It breaks down organic material and returns nutrients to the ecosystem.

Decomposition depends on temperature, moisture, and nutrient availability. In warm, wet places, organic matter usually breaks down faster. For example, rainforest material decomposes more quickly than material in temperate environments, which are cooler and more seasonal.

Human activity can also disrupt these cycles. In Lake Erie, years of phosphorus added through agriculture, along with changes in local weather patterns, helped create the largest harmful algal bloom in the lake’s recorded history in 2011. This nutrient buildup, called eutrophication, supported the growth of toxic cyanobacteria such as Microcystis and Anabaena.
