The Carbon Cycle

- [Instructeur] In de koolstofcyclus, bewegen koolstofatomen door het ecosysteem te beginnen met fotosynthese. Autotrofen, zoals planten, transformeren koolstof vanuit de atmosfeer in de vorm van koolstofdioxide in verbruikbare energie die door heterotrofen worden opgenomen. Deze organismen kunnen de koolstof in de atmosfeer door middel van ademhaling of in de bodem tijdens de ontbinding terugbrengen.

Koolstofdioxide in de atmosfeer is ook zeer goed oplosbaar in water, dus de oceanen vormen een belangrijk reservoir van koolstof. Koolstofdioxide reageert met water om koolzuur en vervolgens carbonaationen te vormen. Calciumcarbonaat in oceaanwater wordt gebruikt om koraalskeletten en weekdierschelpen op te bouwen.

Koolstof kan ook voor korte tijd worden opgeslagen in de lichamen van langlevende bomen en in de grond of, voor een veel langere tijd, in het geval van fossiele brandstoffen, de organische resten van ooit levende organismen. Heterotrofen ontvangen organische koolstof voor groei en onderhoud door autotrofen te consumeren. Door het proces van cellulaire ademhaling worden deze organische moleculen afgebroken om de energie die erin is opgeslagen vrij te geven. De bijproducten van dit proces zijn water en koolstofdioxide, die door ademhaling in de atmosfeer terechtkomen, waardoor de cyclus wordt voortgezet.

Koolstof kan ook in de vorm van dierlijk afval of als rottend materiaal van dode organismen in het milieu terechtkomen. Afbrekers, zoals bacteriën en schimmels, breken deze materialen af in kooldioxide en organische verbindingen.

<h4>Geologisch fietsen op lange termijn</h4>

Koolstof wordt voor langere tijd opgeslagen in de atmosfeer, grote waterlichamen, oceaansediment, bodem, gefossiliseerde dierlijke resten en de binnenkant van de aarde. Koolstofdioxide uit de atmosfeer wordt opgelost in het water van de oceaan, reageert met watermoleculen en wordt omgezet in carbonaten. Gecombineerd met calciumionen vormen deze carbonaten de calciumcarbonaatschelpen van veel mariene organismen, zoals koraal en oesters. Wanneer deze organismen afsterven, worden hun overblijfselen afgebroken en zinken ze mogelijk naar de oceaanbodem en worden ze geleidelijk onderdeel van het sediment. Dit sediment vormt uiteindelijk kalksteen, dat het grootste koolstofreservoir op aarde vormt.

Grote, langlevende bomen kunnen ook eeuwenlang koolstof in hun lichaam opslaan. Als opslagplaats voor de langere termijn (koolstofreservoir) slaan de overblijfselen van organismen gedurende miljoenen jaren koolstof op in de vorm van fossiele brandstoffen – zoals steenkool, aardolie en aardgas – diep in de aarde. Koolstof die diep onder het aardoppervlak is opgeslagen, kan tijdens vulkaanuitbarstingen naar het oppervlak en de atmosfeer terugkeren.

<h4>Menselijke invloed op de koolstofcyclus</h4>

Bij de verbranding van fossiele brandstoffen en hout komen aanzienlijke hoeveelheden koolstofdioxide in de atmosfeer vrij, waardoor het mondiale klimaat verandert. Bovendien beïnvloeden ontbossing en toegenomen landbouwpraktijken de natuurlijke koolstofcyclus door de hoeveelheid organisch materiaal in de bodem te verminderen, de koolstofopslag te verminderen en de niveaus van broeikasgassen, zoals methaan, in de atmosfeer te verhogen.

Carbon moves through living systems and Earth over short and long time scales. It is the basis of all organic matter on Earth, and it cycles through ecosystems by passing between organisms and by moving through rocks, oceans, and the atmosphere. Human activities, including farming and burning fossil fuels, have changed this balance.

In the biological carbon cycle, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere reacts with water to form bicarbonate. Primary producers, or autotrophs, use carbon dioxide and bicarbonate during photosynthesis to make organic compounds such as glucose. These carbon-containing molecules support growth, maintenance, and other life processes.

Heterotrophs get organic carbon by eating autotrophs. They break down these molecules during cellular respiration to release stored energy. Water and carbon dioxide are the main byproducts, and the carbon returns to the atmosphere through respiration. Carbon can also leave organisms as waste or as dead matter. Decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi, break this material down and release carbon dioxide and organic compounds back into the environment.

Carbon also moves through long-term geological storage. It can remain in the atmosphere, large water bodies, ocean sediment, soil, fossilized animal remains, and deep inside the Earth for long periods. In the ocean, dissolved carbon dioxide reacts with water and becomes carbonates. These carbonates combine with calcium ions to form calcium carbonate shells in marine organisms such as coral and oysters. When these organisms die, their remains can sink and become part of sediment, which may later form limestone, the largest carbon reservoir on Earth.

Large, long-lived trees can store carbon in their bodies for centuries. On much longer time scales, the remains of organisms become fossil fuels, including coal, petroleum, and natural gas, deep in the Earth. Carbon stored underground can return to the surface and atmosphere during volcanic eruptions. Burning fossil fuels and wood releases large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which affects global climate. Deforestation and increased agricultural practices also change the natural carbon cycle by reducing soil organic matter, lowering carbon storage, and raising greenhouse gases such as methane.
