The Sulfur Cycle

- [Verteller] Als een gasvormig molecuul, schakelt zwavel over tussen de atmosferische, terrestrische en aquatische ecosystemen. Een vorm, zwaveldioxide, of SO2, komt het terrestrische systeem binnen vanuit de atmosfeer, hetzij als zwak zwavelzuur opgelost in de neerslag of direct afgezet in een proces dat fallout wordt genoemd. De verwering van zwavelhoudende gesteenten door geologische verhoging van oceaansediment brengt ook meer zwavel in het terrestrische ecosysteem.

Vanuit de bodem komt zwavel vervolgens in de voedselketen terecht via de wortels van planten als sulfaten, die door heterotrofen worden geconsumeerd en weer als waterstofsulfide in de atmosfeer vrijkomen door reducenten na de dood van de organismen. Overtollig zwavel in de grond en uit ondergrondse geothermische openingen komt als afvloeiing in de oceaan terecht, waar het neerslaat als sedimenten op de bodem van de oceaan of als biologische energiebron wordt gebruikt door mariene chemo-autotrofen. Vulkanische activiteit en geothermische openingen geven ook zwavel vrij aan de atmosfeer in de vorm van waterstofsulfidegas als een natuurlijk proces.

Echter, de verbranding van fossiele brandstoffen draagt een onnatuurlijk grote hoeveelheid bij aan de atmosfeer, die als zure regen naar de grond terugkeert, waardoor ecosystemen worden beschadigd.

Zwavel, een belangrijk element in de chemische samenstelling van eiwitten, wordt gerecycled via de atmosfeer en het water- en landmilieu. Zwavel wordt in de atmosfeer aangetroffen als zwaveldioxide (SO2). Zwavel komt vrij bij rottende organismen, verweerde rotsen, geothermische bronnen, vulkanen en de verbranding van fossiele brandstoffen. Het wordt in het ecosysteem afgezet, door de biotische gemeenschap gefietst en ofwel als gas weer in de atmosfeer vrijgegeven, ofwel in zeesediment afgezet voor langdurige opslag en uiteindelijk weer in de bodem en de atmosfeer vrijgegeven.

<h4>De biogeochemische zwavelcyclus</h4>

Zwavel is essentieel voor biologische systemen en is een onderdeel van bepaalde aminozuren, zoals cysteïne, dat een belangrijke rol speelt in de structuur van eiwitten. Zwavel wordt naar terrestrische (dat wil zeggen land) ecosystemen gedistribueerd door de buffers van zwak zwavelzuur, directe buffers uit de atmosfeer, verwering van zwavelhoudend gesteente en geothermische ventilatieopeningen.

Vanuit de bodem wordt het door micro-organismen en planten opgenomen en omgezet in organische vormen die door consumenten in het ecosysteem kunnen worden gebruikt. Wanneer organismen afsterven, breken ontleders de organische zwavelverbindingen af in gassen, zoals waterstofsulfide, dat in de atmosfeer wordt geoxideerd om zwaveldioxide te vormen. Bovendien gebruiken sommige chemoautotrofen zwavel als biologische energiebron en recyclen ze zwavelmoleculen rechtstreeks via ecosystemen.

Zwavel wordt in mariene ecosystemen geïntroduceerd via afvoer vanaf het land, directe buffers uit de atmosfeer en geothermische ventilatieopeningen onder water. Een deel van deze zwavel circuleert door de voedselketen en komt als zeespray in de atmosfeer terecht. De rest wordt als sediment op de oceaanbodem afgezet, waar het voor langere tijd wordt opgeslagen. In de loop van de geologische tijd kan opwaartse kracht het sediment terugbrengen naar het land, waar zwavel vrijkomt door erosie.

<h4>Menselijke invloed op de zwavelcyclus</h4>

Door de verbranding van fossiele brandstoffen, met name steenkool, komt er een onnatuurlijke hoeveelheid waterstofsulfidegas in de atmosfeer terecht, wat resulteert in een hogere concentratie zwaveldioxide, die zich manifesteert als zure regen. Zure regen beschadigt het milieu door de pH van meren en rivieren te verlagen, waardoor zowel de water- als de landfauna wordt geschaad.

Sulfur moves through ecosystems as part of the chemical cycle that supports life. It is an important element in proteins and in amino acids such as cysteine, which helps give proteins their structure.

On land, sulfur reaches ecosystems in several ways. Weak sulfuric acid can fall with precipitation, sulfur can drop directly from the atmosphere, rocks can weather and release sulfur, and geothermal vents can add it as well. Plants and microorganisms take sulfur up from the soil and change it into organic forms that consumers can use.

When organisms die, decomposers break down organic sulfur compounds. This process can release gases such as hydrogen sulfide, which is then oxidized in the atmosphere to form sulfur dioxide. Some chemoautotrophs also use sulfur as an energy source, so sulfur can move directly through ecosystems in that way.

Marine ecosystems also receive sulfur from runoff from land, fallout from the atmosphere, and underwater geothermal vents. Some of it moves through the food chain and returns to the atmosphere as sea spray. The rest becomes sediment on the ocean floor, where it can stay for long periods before uplift and erosion return it to land.

Human activity can change this cycle. Burning fossil fuels, especially coal, adds extra hydrogen sulfide gas to the atmosphere and raises sulfur dioxide levels. This can lead to acid rain, which lowers the pH of lakes and rivers and harms both aquatic and terrestrial animals.
