Chemical Formulas

Chemische verbindingen zijn stoffen die zijn samengesteld uit twee of meer elementen in specifieke verhoudingen. Om deze verbindingen nauwkeurig te beschrijven, werden chemische formules ontwikkeld. De chemische formule geeft informatie over elementen en het aantal betrokken ionen of atomen.Elementen worden weergegeven met hun chemisch symbool, terwijl het relatieve aantal ionen of atomen wordt aangegeven met een subscriptnummer. Tafelsuiker of sucrose is bijvoorbeeld een verbinding die de elementen koolstof, waterstof en zuurstof bevat weergegeven met de symbolen C, H en O.De nummers twaalf, tweeëntwintig en elf geven het totale aantal koolstof-waterstof-en zuurstofatomen aan dat in de verbinding aanwezig is. Over het algemeen worden elementen niet in alfabetische volgorde weergegeven, maar beginnen ze met positiever geladen of metallische elementen, gevolgd door meer negatief geladen of minder metallische elementen, zoals kaliumhydroxide.Chemische formules worden gecategoriseerd als moleculair, empirisch en structureel. Moleculaire formules beschrijven een verbinding door elk element en het exacte aantal aanwezige atomen op te sommen. De molecuulformule van glucose is C_6H_12O_6, wat betekent dat glucose bestaat uit zes koolstofatomen, twaalf waterstofatomen en zes zuurstofatomen.De empirische formule geeft de eenvoudigste verhouding van het gehele getal van atomen van aanwezige elementen weer. In glucose is de eenvoudigste verhouding van koolstof-waterstof-en zuurstofatomen 1:2:1 waardoor het de empirische formule CH_2O krijgt. De molecuulformule van een verbinding is ook een veelvoud van een geheel getal van de empirische formule.In glucose geeft de vermenigvuldiging van de empirische formule met het hele getal zes de moleculaire formule. De structuurformule daarentegen geeft de relatie tussen de afzonderlijke atomen grafisch weer. De chemische symbolen geven atomen weer en korte lijnen geven chemische bindingen aan.Enkele lijnen vertegenwoordigen enkele bindingen, terwijl twee en drie lijnen respectievelijk dubbele en drievoudige bindingen kenmerken. Uitgebreide modellen van de structuurformule zoals perspectieftekening, ball-and-stick-model of het ruimtevullende model bieden verschillende driedimensionale perspectieven over de moleculaire vorm. Van de drie chemische formules geeft een structuurformule de meeste informatie over het chemische materiaal, gevolgd door de molecuulformule.De empirische formule is het minst informatief.

Een chemische formule geeft informatie over de verhoudingen van atomen waaruit een bepaalde chemische verbinding of molecuul bestaat, voornamelijk met behulp van symbolen van elementen en getallen. Soms worden ook andere tekens gebruikt, zoals streepjes, haakjes, haakjes, komma's, plus- en mintekens. Een chemische formule kan uit drie typen bestaan: molecuulformule, empirische formule en structuurformule. <h4>Molecuulformule</h4> De molecuulformule vertegenwoordigt een molecuul of een chemische verbinding met behulp van chemische symbolen (om de soorten atomen aan te geven) en subscriptnummers (om het aantal atomen van elk type in het molecuul weer te geven). Molecuulformules worden ook gebruikt als afkorting voor de namen van verbindingen. Sommige elementen bestaan uit afzonderlijke, individuele atomen, zoals de edelgassen helium, neon en argon. Dergelijke elementen worden mono-atomaire gassen genoemd en hebben respectievelijk de molecuulformules He, Ne en Ar. Er bestaan maar weinig elementen als moleculen die bestaan uit twee of meer chemisch gebonden atomen van hetzelfde element. Elementen zoals waterstof, zuurstof en stikstof bestaan bijvoorbeeld als tweeatomige moleculen die elk twee atomen bevatten en hebben dus respectievelijk de molecuulformules H2, O2 en N2. Op dezelfde manier bestaan elementen zoals fosfor en zwavel als polyatomaire moleculen met respectievelijk de molecuulformules P4 en S8. Het is belangrijk op te merken dat een subscript na een symbool en een getal vóór een symbool niet hetzelfde vertegenwoordigen; H2 en 2H vertegenwoordigen bijvoorbeeld duidelijk verschillende soorten. H2 is een molecuulformule; het vertegenwoordigt een tweeatomig waterstofmolecuul, bestaande uit twee atomen van het element die chemisch aan elkaar zijn gebonden. De uitdrukking 2H daarentegen duidt op twee afzonderlijke waterstofatomen die niet als eenheid zijn gecombineerd. De uitdrukking 2H2 vertegenwoordigt twee moleculen diatomische waterstof. <h4>Empirische formule</h4> Verbindingen worden gevormd wanneer twee of meer elementen chemisch worden gecombineerd, wat resulteert in de vorming van bindingen. Waterstof en zuurstof kunnen bijvoorbeeld reageren om water te vormen, en natrium en chloor kunnen reageren om natriumchloride of keukenzout te vormen. Soms beschrijven we de samenstelling van deze verbindingen met een empirische formule, die de typen atomen aangeeft die aanwezig zijn en de eenvoudigste gehele getalsverhouding van het aantal atomen (of ionen) in de verbinding. Titaandioxide (gebruikt als pigment in witte verf en in het dikke, witte, blokkerende type zonnebrandcrème) heeft bijvoorbeeld een empirische formule van TiO2. Dit identificeert de elementen titanium (Ti) en zuurstof (O) als de bestanddelen van titaniumdioxide en duidt op de aanwezigheid van tweemaal zoveel atomen van het element zuurstof als atomen van het element titanium. In veel gevallen wordt de molecuulformule van een stof afgeleid van een experimentele bepaling van zowel de empirische formule als de molecuulmassa (de som van de atoommassa's van alle atomen waaruit het molecuul bestaat). Experimenteel kan bijvoorbeeld worden vastgesteld dat benzeen twee elementen bevat, koolstof (C) en waterstof (H), en dat er voor elk koolstofatoom in benzeen één waterstofatoom is. De empirische formule is dus CH. Uit een experimentele bepaling van de molecuulmassa blijkt dat een benzeenmolecuul zes koolstofatomen en zes waterstofatomen bevat, dus de molecuulformule voor benzeen is C6H6. <h4>Structuurformule</h4> De structuurformule van een verbinding geeft dezelfde informatie als de molecuulformule (de soorten en aantallen atomen in het molecuul), maar laat ook zien hoe de atomen in het molecuul met elkaar verbonden zijn. Met andere woorden: de structuurformule geeft de moleculaire structuur van een verbinding grafisch weer. Het toont de waarschijnlijke rangschikking van de atomen en hoe de atomen verbonden zijn in een echte driedimensionale ruimte, waardoor meer informatie wordt gegeven over de moleculaire geometrie. Lijnen worden gebruikt om de bindingen tussen de atomen weer te geven. De formule kan ook bij benadering de bindingshoeken weergeven, waardoor een idee wordt gegeven van de vorm van het molecuul.

Chemical formulas show the types and proportions of atoms in a compound or molecule. They use element symbols and numbers. Some formulas also use dashes, parentheses, brackets, commas, plus signs, and minus signs.

A molecular formula shows a molecule or compound with chemical symbols and subscript numbers. The symbols tell which atoms are present, and the subscripts show how many of each atom are in the molecule. Molecular formulas can also serve as short names for compounds.

Some elements exist as separate atoms. The noble gases helium, neon, and argon are monatomic gases, so their molecular formulas are He, Ne, and Ar. Other elements form molecules with two or more bonded atoms of the same element. Hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen are diatomic and have the formulas H2, O2, and N2. Phosphorus and sulfur are polyatomic and have the formulas P4 and S8.

It is important to tell the difference between a subscript and a number in front of a symbol. H2 means one diatomic hydrogen molecule. The expression 2H means two separate hydrogen atoms. The expression 2H2 means two hydrogen molecules.

An empirical formula shows the types of atoms present and the simplest whole-number ratio of those atoms or ions in a compound. Compounds form when two or more elements chemically combine and make bonds. Water and sodium chloride are common examples of compounds. Titanium dioxide has the empirical formula TiO2, which shows titanium and oxygen and means there are twice as many oxygen atoms as titanium atoms.

In many cases, a molecular formula is found from the empirical formula and the molecular mass. Molecular mass is the sum of the atomic masses of all atoms in a molecule. Benzene is one example. Experiments show that benzene contains carbon and hydrogen in a 1:1 ratio, so its empirical formula is CH. Its molecular mass shows that one molecule contains six carbon atoms and six hydrogen atoms, so its molecular formula is C6H6.

A structural formula gives the same atom count information as a molecular formula, but it also shows how the atoms are connected. It draws the molecular structure in a way that helps show the probable arrangement of atoms in three-dimensional space. Lines represent bonds between atoms. Structural formulas may also show approximate bond angles, which gives a sense of molecular shape.
