Chemische reacties omvatten chemische omzettingen van een of meer stoffen in verschillende materialen. Daarom zal het cumulatieve aantal atomen van elk element overeenkomen in zowel de reactanten als de producten.Chemische vergelijkingen worden uitgebalanceerd met behulp van numerieke coëfficiënten om het werkelijke aantal atomen dat bij de reactie is betrokken weer te geven. Het is belangrijk om alleen de numerieke coëfficiënten te wijzigen en niet de numerieke subscripts die de identiteit van een verbinding bepalen, terwijl een chemische vergelijking in evenwicht wordt gehouden. Algemene richtlijnen helpen een chemische vergelijking efficiënt te illustreren en aan te passen.Zo wordt de verbranding van vloeibaar benzoëzuur, waarbij gasvormig kooldioxide en water gevormd wordt, aanvankelijk weergegeven met behulp van een chemische skeletvergelijking. De atomen worden vervolgens in evenwicht gebracht door eerst die in de verbindingen aan te passen, gevolgd door de atomen van vrije elementen. De opname van coëfficiënten zeven en drie voor de formules voor kooldioxide en water brengt de koolstof-en waterstofatomen in evenwicht.Een fractionele coëfficiënt van vijftien bij twee past de zuurstofatomen aan. Breukcoëfficiënten worden omgezet in hele getallen door de volledige vergelijking te vermenigvuldigen met de noemer. Het collectieve aantal atomen van elk element is aan beide zijden gelijk in een uitgebalanceerde vergelijking.In chemische vergelijkingen die reacties vertegenwoordigen waarbij ionische verbindingen betrokken zijn, worden de kationen eerst gebalanceerd, gevolgd door de anionen. Polyatomische ionen zijn altijd als een eenheid in evenwicht. Waterig aluminiumsulfaat reageert bijvoorbeeld met waterig calciumhydroxide en vormt vast aluminiumhydroxide en vast calciumsulfaat.Met behulp van een skeletvergelijking worden de kationen van aluminium en calcium in evenwicht gebracht, gevolgd door de anionen van polyatomische hydroxide-en sulfaationen. Ten slotte worden de coëfficiënten aangepast om een algeheel evenwichtige vergelijking te krijgen.

Chemische vergelijkingen vertegenwoordigen de identiteit en relatieve hoeveelheden van stoffen die bij een chemische reactie betrokken zijn. De stoffen die een reactie ondergaan, worden reactanten genoemd en hun formules worden aan de linkerkant van de vergelijking geplaatst. De stoffen die door de reactie worden gegenereerd, worden producten genoemd en hun formules worden aan de rechterkant van de vergelijking geplaatst. Plustekens (+) scheiden individuele reactant- en productformules, en een pijl (→) scheidt de reactant- en productzijde (links en rechts) van de vergelijking. De relatieve aantallen reactanten en productsoorten worden weergegeven door numerieke coëfficiënten, direct links van elke formule geplaatst. Een coëfficiënt van 1 wordt doorgaans niet weergegeven. De kleinst mogelijke gehele getalcoëfficiënten worden gewoonlijk gebruikt in een chemische vergelijking en worden geïnterpreteerd als verhoudingen. Methaan en zuurstof reageren bijvoorbeeld om koolstofdioxide en water op te leveren in een verhouding van 1:2:1:2.  <img alt="Eq1" src="https://www.jove.com/files/core/CDNSource/lessons/1019/1019_Equations-01.png" style="height: 40px;"> De verhouding geeft aan dat de kleinst mogelijke coëfficiënten van methaan, zuurstof, kooldioxide en water respectievelijk 1, 2, 1 en 2 zijn. De coëfficiënten kunnen worden geïnterpreteerd met betrekking tot elke hoeveelheidseenheid (getal), en dus kan deze vergelijking op veel manieren correct worden gelezen, waaronder: i. Eén methaanmolecuul en twee zuurstofmoleculen reageren om één koolstofdioxidemolecuul en twee watermoleculen op te leveren. ii. Eén mol methaanmoleculen en 2 mol zuurstofmoleculen reageren om 1 mol kooldioxidemoleculen en 2 mol watermoleculen op te leveren.  De fysische toestanden van reactanten en producten in chemische vergelijkingen worden vaak aangegeven met een afkorting tussen haakjes na de formules. Standaardafkortingen zijn ‘s’ voor vaste stoffen, ‘l’ voor vloeistoffen, ‘g’ voor gassen en ‘aq’ voor stoffen opgelost in water. <h4>Evenwichtsvergelijkingen</h4> In een uitgebalanceerde vergelijking zijn de aantallen atomen voor elk element dat bij de reactie betrokken is, hetzelfde aan de reactant- en productzijde, waardoor wordt voldaan aan de wet van behoud van materie. Een evenwichtige vergelijking kan worden bevestigd door het aantal atomen aan weerszijden van de pijl op te tellen en deze sommen te vergelijken om er zeker van te zijn dat ze gelijk zijn. Merk op dat het aantal atomen voor een bepaald element wordt berekend door de coëfficiënt van een formule die dat element bevat, te vermenigvuldigen met het subscript van het element in de formule. Als een element in meer dan één formule aan een bepaalde kant van de vergelijking voorkomt, moet het aantal atomen dat in elke formule wordt weergegeven, worden berekend en vervolgens bij elkaar worden opgeteld. Om de vergelijking in evenwicht te brengen, kunnen de coëfficiënten van de vergelijking indien nodig worden gewijzigd. Het is soms handig om breuken in plaats van gehele getallen te gebruiken als tussenliggende coëfficiënten bij het balanceren van een chemische vergelijking. Chemical equations show the identities and relative amounts of substances in a chemical reaction. The substances that react are called reactants, and their formulas are written on the left side of the equation. The substances formed are called products, and their formulas are written on the right side. A plus sign (+) separates formulas on the same side, and an arrow (→) shows the change from reactants to products.

The numbers in a chemical equation are shown with coefficients. A coefficient is the number written in front of a formula. A coefficient of 1 is usually not written. The smallest whole-number coefficients are commonly used, and they work as ratios. For example, methane and oxygen react to form carbon dioxide and water in a 1:2:1:2 ratio.

That ratio can be read in more than one way. It can mean 1 methane molecule and 2 oxygen molecules make 1 carbon dioxide molecule and 2 water molecules. It can also mean 1 mole of methane molecules and 2 moles of oxygen molecules make 1 mole of carbon dioxide molecules and 2 moles of water molecules. Chemical equations may also include physical states after the formulas. Common state labels are s for solid, l for liquid, g for gas, and aq for substances dissolved in water.

A balanced chemical equation has the same number of atoms for each element on both sides. This follows the law of conservation of matter. To check balance, count the atoms on the reactant side and the product side and compare the totals. To find the number of atoms in a formula, multiply the coefficient by the subscript. If an element appears in more than one formula on one side, add all of those atoms together.

Balancing a chemical equation means changing coefficients, not the formulas themselves. Fractions can be used as temporary coefficients during balancing. For the reaction of ethane with oxygen, carbon and hydrogen are balanced first by placing 2 in front of carbon dioxide and 3 in front of water. That leaves 7 oxygen atoms on the product side, so oxygen gets a fractional coefficient of 7/2. The final equation is then multiplied by 2 to turn all coefficients into whole numbers without changing the balance.
