Ionic Bonding and Electron Transfer

Ionische bindingen worden gevormd door de overdracht van elektronen van metalen naar niet-metalen. In vergelijking met covalente bindingen waar elektronen worden gedeeld, hebben metalen in ionische bindingen de neiging om te verliezen en hebben niet-metalen de neiging elektronen te accepteren maar waarom? De meest stabiele elektronenconfiguratie van een atoom is met een volledig octet.Het bereiken van deze toestand in combinatie met het verlagen van de potentiële energieën is een belangrijke drijvende kracht achter de vorming van bindingen. Maar hoe te voorspellen wanneer elektronen worden overgedragen en niet worden gedeeld? Onderzoek hiervoor de ionisatie-energieën en elektronenaffiniteiten van atomen.Op het periodiek systeem hebben s-blok-metalen lage ionisatie-energieën. Dit vergemakkelijkt het verlies van elektronen om een octet te bereiken terwijl tegelijkertijd kationen worden gevormd. Integendeel, niet-metalen uit het p-blok, behalve edelgassen, hebben hoge elektronenaffiniteiten en accepteren gemakkelijk elektronen om anionen te vormen.De tegengesteld geladen kationen en anionen ervaren sterke elektrostatische interacties en trekken elkaar aan om ionische bindingen te vormen. Ionische verbindingen vormen vaak harde en goed gedefinieerde kristalstructuren met hoge smeltpunten, vanwege de sterke elektrostatische aantrekkingskracht tussen ionen. Overweeg lithiumfluoride, een ionische verbinding gemaakt van lithium en fluor.Wanneer lithium een elektron verliest om een lithiumkation te worden met een duet, wordt het elektron opgenomen door fluor om het anion met een octet te vormen. Volgens de wet van Coulomb worden deze twee geladen deeltjes tot elkaar aangetrokken om lithiumfluoride te vormen, een neutrale verbinding. Het Lewis-model kan worden gebruikt om de chemische formule van ionische verbindingen te beschrijven en te voorspellen.Het Lewis-symbool toont ladingen in de rechterbovenhoek en geeft anionen en kationen weer met het symbool tussen haakjes. Overweeg strontiumchloride, een veelgebruikt zout om een felrode kleur te krijgen in vuurwerk. ionische binding en elektronenoverdracht

Ionen zijn atomen of moleculen die een elektrische lading dragen. Een kation (een positief ion) ontstaat wanneer een neutraal atoom een of meer elektronen uit zijn valentieschil verliest, en een anion (een negatief geladen ion) ontstaat wanneer een neutraal atoom een of meer elektronen in zijn valentieschil krijgt. Verbindingen die uit ionen bestaan, worden ionische verbindingen (of zouten) genoemd, en hun samenstellende ionen worden bij elkaar gehouden door ionische bindingen: elektrostatische aantrekkingskrachten tussen tegengesteld geladen kationen en anionen.  

 <h4>Eigenschappen van ionische verbindingen</h4> 

 De eigenschappen van ionische verbindingen werpen enig licht op de aard van ionische bindingen. 
 <ul> 
 	<li>Ionische vaste stoffen vertonen een kristallijne structuur en zijn vaak stijf en bros; ze hebben ook de neiging om hoge smelt- en kookpunten te hebben, wat erop wijst dat ionische bindingen erg sterk zijn. </li> 
 	<li>Ionische vaste stoffen zijn om dezelfde reden ook slechte elektriciteitsgeleiders: de sterkte van ionische bindingen verhindert dat ionen zich vrij in de vaste toestand kunnen bewegen. </li> 
 	<li>De meeste ionische vaste stoffen lossen echter gemakkelijk op in water. Eenmaal opgelost of gesmolten zijn ionische verbindingen uitstekende geleiders van elektriciteit en warmte, omdat de ionen zich vrij kunnen bewegen.</li> 
 </ul> 

 <h4>De vorming van ionische verbindingen</h4> 
 Veel metalen elementen hebben een relatief laag ionisatiepotentieel en verliezen gemakkelijk elektronen. Deze elementen liggen aan de linkerkant in een periode of nabij de onderkant van een groep op het periodiek systeem. Niet-metaalatomen hebben relatief hoge elektronenaffiniteiten en winnen dus gemakkelijk elektronen die verloren gaan door metaalatomen, waardoor hun valentieschillen worden gevuld. Niet-metalen elementen bevinden zich in de rechterbovenhoek van het periodiek systeem.

 Omdat alle stoffen elektrisch neutraal moeten zijn, moet het totale aantal positieve ladingen op de kationen van een ionische verbinding gelijk zijn aan het totale aantal negatieve ladingen op de anionen ervan. De formule van een ionische verbinding vertegenwoordigt de eenvoudigste verhouding van het aantal ionen dat nodig is om identieke aantallen positieve en negatieve ladingen te geven.  

 <h4>Ionische verbindingen vormen regelmatig gerangschikte driedimensionale structuren</h4> 

 Het is echter belangrijk op te merken dat de formule voor een ionische verbinding niet de fysieke rangschikking van zijn ionen weergeeft. Het is onjuist om te verwijzen naar het ‘molecuul’ van natriumchloride (NaCl), omdat er op zichzelf geen enkele ionische binding bestaat tussen een specifiek paar natrium- en chloride-ionen. De aantrekkingskrachten tussen ionen zijn isotroop – hetzelfde in alle richtingen – wat betekent dat een bepaald ion in gelijke mate wordt aangetrokken door alle nabijgelegen ionen met tegengestelde lading. Dit heeft tot gevolg dat de ionen zichzelf rangschikken in een strak gebonden, driedimensionale roosterstructuur. Natriumchloride bestaat bijvoorbeeld uit een regelmatige opstelling van gelijke aantallen Na+ kationen en Cl– anionen. De sterke elektrostatische aantrekkingskracht tussen Na+- en Cl–-ionen houdt ze stevig bij elkaar in vast NaCl. Er is 769 kJ energie nodig om één mol vast NaCl te dissociëren in afzonderlijke gasvormige Na+- en Cl–-ionen.  

 <h4>Elektronische structuren van kationen</h4> 

 Bij het vormen van een kation heeft een atoom van het hoofdgroepelement de neiging al zijn valentie-elektronen te verliezen, waardoor het de elektronische structuur aanneemt van het edelgas dat eraan voorafgaat in het periodiek systeem.  

 <ul> 
 	<li>Voor groepen 1 (de alkalimetalen) en 2 (de aardalkalimetalen) zijn de groepsnummers gelijk aan het aantal valentieschilelektronen en dus aan de ladingen van de kationen gevormd uit atomen van deze elementen wanneer alle valentieschilelektronen aanwezig zijn, zijn verwijderd. </li> 
 	<li>Calcium is bijvoorbeeld een element uit groep 2 waarvan de neutrale atomen 20 elektronen hebben en een elektronenconfiguratie in de grondtoestand van 1s22s22p63s23p64s2. Wanneer een Ca-atoom zijn beide valentie-elektronen verliest, is het resultaat een kation met 18 elektronen, een lading van 2+ en een elektronenconfiguratie van 1s22s22p63s23p6. Het Ca2+-ion is daarom iso-elektronisch met het edelgas Ar.</li> 
 	<li>Voor de groepen 13–17 overschrijden de groepsnummers het aantal valentie-elektronen met 10 (wat rekening houdt met de mogelijkheid van volledige d-subshells in atomen van elementen in de vierde en grotere perioden). De lading van een kation gevormd door het verlies van alle valentie-elektronen is dus gelijk aan het groepsnummer minus 10. Aluminium (in groep 13) vormt bijvoorbeeld 3+ ionen (Al3+).</li> 
 </ul> 
 <h4>Uitzonderingen</h4> 
 <ul> 
 	<li>Uitzonderingen op het verwachte gedrag betreffen elementen aan de onderkant van de groepen. </li> 
 	<li>Naast de verwachte ionen Tl3+, Sn4+, Pb4+ en Bi5+ kan een gedeeltelijk verlies van de valentieschilelektronen van deze atomen ook leiden tot de vorming van Tl+-, Sn2+-, Pb2+- en Bi3+-ionen. De vorming van deze 1+, 2+ en 3+ kationen wordt toegeschreven aan het inerte paareffect, dat de relatief lage energie van het valentie-s-elektronenpaar voor atomen van de zware elementen van de groepen 13, 14 en 15 weerspiegelt. </li> 
 	<li>Kwik (groep 12) vertoont ook een onverwacht gedrag: het vormt een diatomisch ion, Hg22+ (een ion gevormd uit twee kwikatomen, met een Hg-Hg-binding), naast het verwachte mono-atomaire ion Hg2+ (gevormd uit slechts één kwikatoom).</li> 
 	<li>Overgangs- en binnenovergangsmetaalelementen gedragen zich anders dan de hoofdgroepelementen. De meeste overgangsmetaalkationen hebben 2+ of 3+ ladingen die het gevolg zijn van het verlies van eerst hun buitenste s-elektron(en), soms gevolgd door het verlies van één of twee d-elektronen uit de op één na buitenste schil.</li> 
 	<li>Hoewel de d-orbitalen van de overgangselementen – volgens het Aufbau-principe – de laatste zijn die worden gevuld bij het opbouwen van elektronenconfiguraties, gaan de buitenste s-elektronen als eerste verloren wanneer deze atomen ioniseren. Wanneer de binnenste overgangsmetalen ionen vormen, hebben ze meestal een lading van 3+, als gevolg van het verlies van hun buitenste s-elektronen en een d- of f-elektron.</li> 
 </ul> 

 <h4>Elektronische structuren van anionen</h4> 
 De meeste mono-atomaire anionen ontstaan wanneer een neutraal niet-metaalatoom voldoende elektronen verkrijgt om zijn buitenste s- en p-orbitalen volledig te vullen, waardoor de elektronenconfiguratie van het volgende edelgas wordt bereikt. Het is dus eenvoudig om de lading van zo’n negatief geladen ion te bepalen: de lading is gelijk aan het aantal elektronen dat moet worden gewonnen om de s- en p-orbitalen van het ouderatoom te vullen. Zuurstof heeft bijvoorbeeld de elektronenconfiguratie 1s22s22p4, terwijl het zuurstofanion de elektronenconfiguratie heeft van het edelgas neon (Ne), 1s22s22p6. De twee extra elektronen die nodig zijn om de valentie-orbitalen te vullen, geven het oxide-ion de lading 2– (O2–).

Ionic compounds form when positive and negative ions attract each other. A cation is a positive ion, and it forms when an atom loses one or more valence electrons. An anion is a negative ion, and it forms when an atom gains one or more valence electrons. Compounds made of these ions are called ionic compounds, or salts, and the force between them is an ionic bond.

The properties of ionic solids help show how strong this attraction is. They usually form rigid, brittle crystals and have high melting and boiling points. They are also poor conductors of electricity in the solid state because the ions cannot move freely. Most ionic solids dissolve readily in water. When an ionic compound is melted or dissolved, it conducts electricity and heat well because the ions can move about freely.

Ionic compounds form most easily when metals lose electrons and nonmetals gain them. Many metals have low ionization potentials, so they lose electrons easily. These elements are found on the left side of the periodic table or near the bottom of a group. Nonmetals have high electron affinities, so they readily gain the electrons lost by metals. They are found in the upper-right corner of the periodic table.

Ionic compounds must remain electrically neutral. That means the total positive charge from the cations must equal the total negative charge from the anions. The formula of an ionic compound gives the simplest ratio of ions needed to balance charge. The formula does not show the physical layout of the ions. In solid sodium chloride, for example, the ions form a tightly bound three-dimensional lattice. The attraction between Na+ and Cl- ions is strong, and it takes 769 kJ of energy to separate one mole of solid NaCl into gaseous ions.

Main-group cations often form by losing all valence electrons and taking on the electron structure of the noble gas before them. For groups 1 and 2, the group number matches the number of valence electrons and also the charge of the ion formed. Calcium is a group 2 element. A neutral calcium atom has 20 electrons, and Ca2+ has 18 electrons with the same electron configuration as argon. For groups 13 through 17, the cation charge equals the group number minus 10. Aluminum, in group 13, forms Al3+.

Some heavy main-group elements do not follow the expected pattern exactly. Thallium, tin, lead, and bismuth can also form lower-charge ions such as Tl+, Sn2+, Pb2+, and Bi3+. This is explained by the inert pair effect, which reflects the relatively low energy of the valence s-electron pair in these heavy atoms. Mercury is another exception. It can form the diatomic ion Hg2^2+, which contains a Hg-Hg bond, as well as the monatomic ion Hg2+.

Transition metals and inner transition metals form ions in a different way. Most transition metal cations have 2+ or 3+ charges. These usually come from losing the outermost s electron or electrons first, and sometimes one or two d electrons after that. Even though d orbitals fill later according to the Aufbau principle, the outermost s electrons are lost first when transition metals ionize. Inner transition metals usually form 3+ ions by losing their outermost s electrons and one d or f electron.

Most monatomic anions form when a nonmetal atom gains enough electrons to fill its outer s and p orbitals. The charge on the ion equals the number of electrons needed to reach the next noble-gas electron configuration. Oxygen is a clear example. A neutral oxygen atom has the configuration 1s2 2s2 2p4. The oxide ion, O2-, has the neon configuration, 1s2 2s2 2p6, after gaining two electrons.
