Chemical Reactions

Consider a balanced chemical reaction, such as the combustion of hydrogen gas. Here, the quantitative relationship between the reactants and products &#8212; H2, O2, and H2O &#8212; is that two molecules of H2 react with one molecule of O2 to produce two molecules of H2O. This quantitative relationship is known as stoichiometry.
In a chemical reaction, reactants interact with each other to form products. The reactant that is completely consumed is the limiting reactant, and the reactant present in a quantity greater than necessary to react completely with the limiting reactant is the excess reactant.
A chemical reaction involves the chemical transformation of reactants into products. As the reaction progresses, the concentration of reactants decreases while the concentration of products increases. This variance in concentrations of reactants and products can be plotted in a graph as a function of time.
The speed at which a reaction progresses is called the reaction rate. It measures the rate of reactants&#8217; disappearance or the rate of products&#8217; appearance and is expressed in units of molarity-per-second.
A reversible chemical reaction is one in which the conversion of reactants into products and the conversion of products back into reactants occur simultaneously. A double arrow between the reactants and products signifies its reversible nature.
When the rate of formation of products, or the rate of the forward reaction, equals the rate of formation of reactants, or the rate of the reverse reaction, chemical equilibrium is achieved.
The equilibrium constant expression is written as the molar concentrations of the products, C and D, over the reactants, A and B, at equilibrium, each raised to their respective stoichiometric coefficients. When solved, the expression is equal to the equilibrium constant, Kc.
An expression in the same form can also be written for the reactants and products at any concentration, and the calculated quantity is known as the reaction quotient, Qc.

Een uitgebalanceerde chemische vergelijking levert de informatie over chemische formules van de reactanten en producten die betrokken zijn bij de chemische verandering. De stoichiometrie van een reactie helpt voorspellen hoeveel van de reactant nodig is om de gewenste hoeveelheid product te produceren, of in sommige gevallen hoeveel product er zal worden gevormd uit een specifieke hoeveelheid van de reactant.


 De relatieve hoeveelheden reactanten en producten die in een uitgebalanceerde chemische vergelijking worden weergegeven, worden vaak stoichiometrische hoeveelheden genoemd. In werkelijkheid zijn de reactanten echter niet altijd aanwezig in de stoichiometrische hoeveelheden die worden aangegeven door de uitgebalanceerde vergelijking.


 Bij een chemische reactie is de reactant die als eerste wordt verbruikt en die de hoeveelheid gevormd product beperkt, de beperkende reactant, terwijl de andere stof de overtollige reactant wordt. Vaak wordt een overmaat van één of meer reactanten gebruikt om de volledige omzetting van de andere reactant in het product te garanderen.


 Beschouw de reactie voor de vorming van water, weergegeven door de vergelijking:

 Stoichiometrie geeft aan dat twee mol waterstof en één mol zuurstof reageren om twee mol water te produceren; dat wil zeggen, waterstof en zuurstof combineren in een verhouding van 2:1.


 Stel je voor dat er 5 mol waterstof en 2 mol zuurstof aanwezig zijn. De verhouding van de reactanten is nu 5:2 (of 2,5:1), wat groter is dan de stoichiometrische verhouding van 2:1. Waterstof is daarom in overmaat aanwezig en zuurstof is de beperkende reactant. Bij de reactie van alle geleverde zuurstof (2 mol) wordt 4 mol van de 5 mol geleverde waterstof verbruikt, waardoor 1 mol waterstof niet reageert. Het berekenen van de molaire hoeveelheden van elke geleverde reactant en deze te vergelijken met de stoichiometrische hoeveelheden weergegeven in de uitgebalanceerde chemische vergelijking is één manier om de beperkende en overtollige reactanten te identificeren.


 De reactiesnelheid is de verandering in de hoeveelheid van een reactant of product per tijdseenheid. Reactiesnelheden worden daarom bepaald door het meten van de tijdsafhankelijkheid van een eigenschap die verband kan houden met de hoeveelheden reactant of product.

 De snelheid van een chemische reactie kan in een grafiek worden uitgezet als de variatie in concentraties van reactanten en producten als functie van de tijd.


 Een omkeerbare chemische reactie vertegenwoordigt een chemisch proces dat zowel in voorwaartse (van links naar rechts) als in omgekeerde richting (van rechts naar links) verloopt. De status van een omkeerbare reactie wordt gemakkelijk beoordeeld door het reactiequotiënt (Q) ervan te evalueren. Voor een omkeerbare reactie beschreven door het reactiequotiënt wordt rechtstreeks afgeleid van de stoichiometrie van de gebalanceerde vergelijking as, waarbij het subscript c het gebruik van molaire concentraties in de uitdrukking aangeeft.

Stoichiometry, reaction rates, and equilibrium explain how chemical reactions are measured and predicted. A balanced chemical equation shows the chemical formulas of the reactants and products in a chemical change. It also gives the relative amounts of each substance involved.

Reaction stoichiometry helps predict how much reactant is needed to make a desired amount of product. It can also show how much product forms from a given amount of reactant. The amounts shown by a balanced equation are called stoichiometric amounts.

In real reactions, reactants are not always present in the exact amounts shown by the equation. The limiting reactant is the substance that gets used up first. It limits how much product can form. The other substance is the excess reactant. Extra reactant is often added so the other reactant can be fully converted into product.

Water formation is a clear example. The balanced equation shows that 2 moles of hydrogen react with 1 mole of oxygen to make 2 moles of water. This is a 2:1 ratio. If 5 moles of hydrogen and 2 moles of oxygen are available, the ratio is 5:2, or 2.5:1. Hydrogen is then in excess, and oxygen is the limiting reactant. All 2 moles of oxygen use 4 moles of hydrogen, leaving 1 mole of hydrogen unreacted.

Reaction rate is the change in the amount of a reactant or product per unit time. Scientists find reaction rates by measuring how a property changes over time if that property can be linked to reactant or product amounts. A rate graph can show how reactant and product concentrations vary with time.

Some reactions are reversible, which means they can proceed in both the forward and reverse directions. The reaction quotient, Q, helps assess the status of a reversible reaction. It is based on the stoichiometry of the balanced equation, and the subscript c shows that molar concentrations are used in the expression. When the forward and reverse rates are equal, concentrations stay constant and the system is at equilibrium. A double arrow is used to show that the reaction is reversible.
