Predicting Reaction Outcomes

Chemical kinetics describes the rate and path by which reactants move from one state to another in the reaction pathway, whereas thermodynamics considers the relative stabilities of the states themselves.
Compounds A and B can react with each other in two possible pathways, one leading to products C and D, and the other leading to products E and F.
Products C and D are kinetically favored over E and F, as their formation requires smaller activation energy. Moreover, they are thermodynamically more favorable on account of their lower energies.
In most cases, a reaction pathway is both thermodynamically and kinetically favored, although there are instances where thermodynamics and kinetics oppose each other.
In this case, products C and D are favored by thermodynamics because they have lower energy. However, products E and F are preferred by kinetics because their formation involves lower energy of activation.
Temperature plays an important role in determining the major product. At low temperatures, products E and F form rapidly, whereas at high temperatures, equilibrium concentrations are quickly achieved, producing C and D.
If the activation energy barrier is sufficiently high, the reactants are considered &#39;kinetically stable&#39;. However, adding energy can overcome this barrier.
For instance, petroleum fuels and atmospheric oxygen do not spontaneously react at room temperature. However, in a car engine, the fuel is ignited by a spark from an external energy source, and the reaction between the fuel and atmospheric oxygen reaches equilibrium.
The size of the reacting particles impacts their collision frequency, as several smaller particles have a larger overall surface area than one large particle. The greater the surface area on which collisions can occur, the faster the reaction.
For example, breaking larger logs into smaller pieces of kindling increases their surface area. With more accessible fuel, the fire more rapidly provides the needed energy to sustain the combustion reaction.

Kinetics describes the rate and path by which a reaction occurs. In contrast, thermodynamics deals with state functions and describes the properties, behavior, and components of a system. It is not concerned with the path taken by the process and cannot address the rate at which a reaction occurs. Although it does provide information about what can happen during a reaction process, it does not describe the detailed steps of what appears on an atomic or a molecular level. On the other hand, kinetics provides information on an atomic or molecular level. In short, thermodynamics focuses on the energetics of the products and the reactants, whereas kinetics focuses on the pathway from reactants to products. Industrial processes where the value of &#916;G is negative and the corresponding value of K is greater than one are too slow to be economically profitable. In such cases, a thermodynamically non-spontaneous reaction can be made to occur spontaneously by changing the reaction conditions, such as varying the pressure or temperature, supplying an external source of energy in the form of electricity, etc.
Atoms, molecules, or ions must collide before they can react with each other. Atoms must be close together to form chemical bonds. This premise is the basis for a theory that explains many observations regarding chemical kinetics, including factors affecting reaction rates. The collision theory is based on the postulates that (i) the reaction rate is proportional to the rate of reactant collisions, (ii) the reacting species collide in an orientation allowing contact between the atoms that become bonded together in the product, and (iii) the collision occurs with adequate energy to permit mutual penetration of the reacting species&#8217; valence shells so that the electrons can rearrange and form new bonds (and new chemical species). When reactant species collide with both the correct orientation and enough activation energy, they combine to form an unstable species called an activated complex or a transition state. These species are short-lived and usually undetectable by most analytical instruments. In some cases, sophisticated spectral measurements can observe transition states. Collision theory explains why most reaction rates increase as temperature increases; with an increase in temperature, the frequency of collisions increases. More collisions mean a faster reaction rate, assuming the energy of the collisions is adequate.

Reaction rate and reaction pathway are key ideas in chemical kinetics. Thermodynamics, by contrast, focuses on the state of a system. It describes the properties, behavior, and components of reactants and products. It does not describe the path of the process or the speed of the reaction. Kinetics gives information on the atomic or molecular level, while thermodynamics focuses on the energetics of the reactants and products.

Thermodynamics can show what may happen in a reaction, but it does not explain the detailed steps at the atomic level. Kinetics fills that gap by following how reactants become products. In industrial settings, some reactions have a negative ΔG and a K value greater than one, but they can still be too slow to make money. A reaction that is not spontaneous under one set of conditions can be made to happen by changing pressure or temperature or by supplying outside energy such as electricity.

Collision theory explains how reactions occur. Atoms, molecules, or ions must collide before they can react, and they must be close together to form chemical bonds. According to collision theory, the reaction rate depends on how often reactants collide, whether they collide in the right orientation, and whether the collision has enough energy for the valence shells to penetrate so electrons can rearrange and new bonds can form. When all of these conditions are met, the reactants form an unstable species called an activated complex, also called a transition state.

Transition states are very short-lived and are usually not detected by most analytical instruments. In some cases, advanced spectral measurements can observe them. Collision theory also helps explain why reaction rates usually increase when temperature rises. Higher temperature means more collisions, and more collisions can lead to a faster reaction if the collision energy is still sufficient.
