Multiple Allele Traits

- [Instructeur] Voor hetzelfde gen kunnen vele allelen interageren om fenotypes te beïnvloeden. Zoals de vorm en eiwitsamenstelling van individuele cellen. Bijvoorbeeld, in erytrocyten, of rode bloedcellen heeft het hemoglobine-eiwit een component dat wordt gecodeerd door het bèta-globine-gen waarvoor verschillende allelen zijn geïdentificeerd.

Samen zijn dit de meerdere allelen van bèta-globine. Voor het mutante sikkelallel vertonen homozygoten stijve halvemaanvormige rode bloedcellen die bloedvaten verstoppen. Terwijl die met het normale allel flexibele schijfachtige erytrocyten vertonen die gemakkelijk door het vaatstelsel reizen.

Interessant is dat heterozygoten enkele licht gebogen cellen kunnen vertonen, een vorm verergerd bij weinig zuurstof. Omdat de erytrocytmorfologie van heterozygoten tussen die van de homozygoten valt, is dit een voorbeeld van een allelinteractie, onvolledige dominantie genaamd. Als het sikkelallel dominant was, zouden heterozygoten alleen sikkelvormige cellen vertonen, wat niet het geval is.

Moleculair vertonen heterozygoten een andere allelinteractie die codominantie wordt genoemd. Dit komt omdat de eiwitproducten van zowel het normale allel als het sikkelallel, waardoor hemoglobine-eiwitten aan elkaar blijven plakken, in gelijke hoeveelheden in hun rode bloedcellen voorkomen. Als alleen het sikkelallel zou worden uitgedrukt, zou het dominant zijn. Dit gebeurt echter niet. Door allelinteracties te bestuderen op moleculair en cellulair niveau, begrijpen onderzoekers de resulterende fenotypes en complicaties van menselijke aandoeningen zoals sikkelceleigenschappen, waardoor de behandeling wordt verbeterd.

<h4>Incomplete dominantie</h4>

Sikkelcelanemie, die wordt veroorzaakt door een mutatie in het gen dat codeert voor betaglobine (HBB), is een voorbeeld van onvolledige dominantie. These allele combinations can produce traits with more than two possible outcomes. The ABO blood group system is a common example of a multiple allele trait. It shows how different alleles can interact to determine an organism’s phenotype, or observable trait.

Multiple allele traits help explain why inheritance patterns can be more varied than a simple dominant-recessive model. They are an important part of Mendelian genetics and are often used to study how genetic variation appears in real populations.
