Molecules with 100% transmittance do not absorb energy, so only molecules with lower transmittance values produce infrared spectra.
A compound&#39;s IR spectrum is the plot of intensity or percentage transmittance versus wavenumber, where percentage transmittance is the ordinate and wavenumber is the abscissa.
Downward signals on a spectrum indicate absorption bands at specific frequencies in wavenumbers. For instance, in decane, peaks around 3000, 1465, and 1375 cm-1, signify energy absorption at these frequencies.
Signals on the left indicate high energy, high-frequency radiations, whereas those on the right denote low energy, low-frequency radiations.
Absorption bands corresponding to most functional groups lie above 1500 cm-1&#160;in the diagnostic region.
The region below 1500 cm-1&#160;is the fingerprint region, where each molecule shows a distinctive pattern. For example, 1-butanol and 2-butanol&#160; have similar functional groups but different absorption bands in this region.

 Wanneer infraroodstraling (IR) door een molecuul gaat, rekken of buigen de bindingen door de straling te absorberen. Deze absorptie creëert het absorptiespectrum van het molecuul, wat de grafiek is van het percentage transmissie versus golfgetal.

Infrared (IR) spectroscopy shows how a molecule responds when IR radiation passes through it. The bonds in the molecule stretch or bend as they absorb that energy. This creates an absorption spectrum, which plots percent transmittance against wavenumber.

Transmittance is the ratio of radiant power that passes through a sample to the radiant power from the source. When transmittance is multiplied by 100, it becomes percent transmittance, or %T. %T ranges from 100% for no absorption to 0% for complete absorption. A 100% transmittance signal means the molecule has not absorbed energy, while lower %T values show that absorption has taken place.

The IR spectrum is usually read by looking at downward-pointing peaks called absorption bands. Their positions are reported with wavenumber or frequency values. In IR spectroscopy, wavenumber ranges from 400 to 4000 cm−1. Signals on the left side of the spectrum represent higher-energy, higher-frequency radiation, while signals on the right side represent lower-energy, lower-frequency radiation.

IR peaks are also described by their shape and intensity. They may be strong, medium, weak, broad, or sharp. The spectrum is divided into two main regions. The functional group region, also called the diagnostic region, is the left two-thirds of the spectrum. Most functional group bands appear there.

The right-hand side is the fingerprint region. Like a person’s fingerprint, it is unique to each compound. The diagnostic region mainly shows bond stretching vibrations. The fingerprint region includes more complex motions such as bond rocking, bending, and twisting. Even if two compounds share the same functional group, their fingerprint patterns can still differ because their chemical environments are not the same.
