Acceleration due to Gravity on Earth

An object is considered to be free-falling when the only force acting on it is the Earth&#39;s gravitational force. The acceleration of such a free-falling object is called acceleration due to gravity, denoted by g.
According to Newton&#39;s second law of motion, the magnitude of the force acting on the object is equal to its mass times its acceleration. It is also known as the object&#39;s weight.
Equating mg&#160;with the gravitational force equation, the acceleration due to gravity of the object can be expressed as the product of the gravitational constant and the Earth&#39;s mass, divided by the square of its distance from the Earth&#39;s center.
The average measured value of g&#160;close to the Earth&#8217;s surface is 9.8 m/s2. Since g&#160;is independent of the object&#39;s mass, all masses near the Earth&#39;s surface free-fall with the same acceleration.
Therefore, substituting the values of acceleration due to gravity, the gravitational constant, and the distance as the Earth&#39;s radius, the Earth&#8217;s mass is estimated to be 5.97 &#215; 1024 kilograms.

Gravity near Earth gives objects a downward acceleration called acceleration due to gravity. It comes from Earth’s gravitational pull and points toward the center of the Earth. Newton’s law of gravitation shows that the gravitational force depends on mass, while Newton’s second law shows that the acceleration produced by a force depends on how that force acts on the object.

Because of this relationship, the acceleration due to gravity is independent of an object’s mass. An object and the Earth pull on each other with equal force in opposite directions. But Earth’s mass is so large compared with ordinary objects that Earth’s acceleration is negligible.

For problems on or near Earth’s surface, Earth can be treated as an inertial frame of reference. That makes it a useful frame for studying motion. The acceleration due to gravity near the surface is about 9.80 m/s², and it can usually be taken as constant when the object stays close to the ground.

This approximation works even for tall places like Mount Everest. It does not hold as well far above Earth, where gravity changes at distances hundreds of kilometers from the surface. Gravity also varies from the equator to the poles because Earth rotates about its axis.

The value of g is linked to Earth’s mass and average radius through the gravitational constant. If one of these quantities is known, the other can be estimated. For example, if Earth’s radius is measured geometrically, Earth’s mass can also be found.
