In a dispersive infrared spectrometer, the radiation produced by the hot wire is divided by mirrors into two parallel equal intensity beams that pass through the reference and sample cells.
Its monochromator consists of a beam chopper that passes the beams alternately towards a slowly rotating diffraction grating prism which varies the frequency or wavelength of the radiation.
A thermocouple detector senses the intensity ratio of both of the beams.
Finally, the signal from the detector is amplified, and the recorder draws the spectrum.
A Fourier transform infrared spectrometer involves an interferometer, wherein the radiation passes through a beam splitter, a fixed mirror, and a moving mirror, before it reaches the sample.
The beam splitter separates the beam into deflected and undeflected radiations, which are allowed to fall on fixed and moving mirrors, respectively.
The two beams recombine at the splitter to produce an interference pattern or an interferogram containing a wide range of wavelengths or frequencies.
The detector detects the interferogram modified by the sample, and the computer extracts the individual frequencies using the Fourier transform operation.

Er zijn twee belangrijke infrarood (IR) spectrofotometers: dispersieve IR-spectrometers en Fourier Transform-infrarood (FTIR) spectrometers. In een dispersieve IR-spectrometer wordt een bundel infraroodstraling die wordt geproduceerd door een hete draad, verdeeld in twee parallelle bundels met gelijke intensiteit met behulp van spiegels. Eén bundel gaat door het monster, terwijl de andere een referentiebundel is. De bundels bewegen vervolgens door de monochromator, die de straling scheidt in een continu spectrum van verschillende frequenties. Vervolgens gaat de straling door de thermokoppeldetector die de verhouding tussen de intensiteiten van de twee bundels meet. Het signaal van de detector wordt versterkt en het resulterende spectrum wordt getekend met behulp van de recorder. Dispersieve IR-spectrometers registreren het spectrum in het frequentiedomein, wat betekent dat het spectrum wordt vastgelegd terwijl de frequentie van de straling verandert met de rotatie van het diffractierooster.

In een FTIR-spectrometer wordt de straling die door de bron wordt geproduceerd, door een beamsplitter geleid. Een beamsplitter is een spiegel die onder een hoek van 45° ten opzichte van de binnenkomende straling is geplaatst en de bundel scheidt in afgebogen en niet-afgebogen straling. Deze straling mag later op vaste en bewegende spiegels vallen. Het is belangrijk om op te merken dat de beweging van de twee spiegels de padlengte van de bundels verandert en de door de spiegels gereflecteerde straling wordt gecombineerd in de beamsplitter. De geproduceerde gecombineerde bundel bevat dus zowel constructieve als destructieve interferentiepatronen vanwege verschillen in de padlengte van de straling.

De resulterende gecombineerde bundel, een interferogram genoemd, wordt door de detector geleid. De detector detecteert het interferogram dat door het monster is gewijzigd, en het FT-proces scheidt de individuele absorptiefrequentie van het interferogram.

FTIR-spectrometers hebben de voorkeur boven dispersieve IR-spectrometers vanwege hun snellere werking en grotere gevoeligheid.

IR spectrometers use infrared light to compare a sample beam with a reference beam and record how each one behaves. The two main instruments are dispersive IR spectrometers and Fourier transform infrared, or FTIR, spectrometers.

In a dispersive IR spectrometer, a hot wire produces the infrared beam. Mirrors split it into two equal beams. One beam passes through the sample, and the other serves as the reference. The beams then move into the monochromator, which separates the radiation into a continuous range of frequencies.

The monochromator uses a rapidly rotating beam chopper and a diffraction grating. The chopper alternates the sample and reference beams before they reach the grating. After that, a thermocouple detector measures the ratio of the two beam intensities. The detector signal is amplified, and a recorder draws the spectrum. Dispersive IR spectrometers record data in the frequency domain, so the spectrum is captured as the grating rotates and the frequency changes.

FTIR spectrometers follow a different path. The source radiation passes through a beam splitter, which is a mirror placed at a 45° angle to the incoming beam. The splitter divides the beam into deflected and undeflected parts. These parts fall on fixed and moving mirrors, and the changing mirror motion changes the path length of the beams. When the beams return to the beam splitter, they combine and produce both constructive and destructive interference.

Constructive interference happens when wave peaks line up. Destructive interference happens when a peak meets a trough and the waves partly cancel. The combined beam is called an interferogram. It then passes through the detector, which measures the interferogram after it has been modified by the sample. The FT process separates the individual absorption frequencies from that pattern. FTIR spectrometers are often preferred because they work faster and are more sensitive than dispersive IR spectrometers.
