Thermodynamic Systems

In thermodynamics, the objects under observation are considered a system, and all the surrounding objects, outside the system&#39;s boundary,&#160; are the environment.
A car, including the fuel inside its fuel tank, can be considered a system. The road along with the surrounding area is the environment.
If the car is stationary, it does not exchange any matter or energy with the environment. Such a system is called an isolated system.
When the car engine ignites, the fuel combustion lets out the exhaust gasses, the wheels experience the frictional force due to the road, moving the car forward. Here, both matter and energy are exchanged with the environment, and hence the car in motion can be considered an open system.
If the car&#39;s engine is turned off, the frictional force between the car wheels and the road gradually halts the car. Here, only energy, is exchanged between the system and the environment. Such a system is called a closed system.

Een thermodynamisch systeem is een verzameling objecten waarvan de thermodynamische eigenschappen van belang zijn. Het systeem wordt geacht ingebed te zijn in zijn omgeving of de omgeving. Het systeem en zijn omgeving kunnen warmte uitwisselen en op elkaar inwerken via een grens die hen scheidt. De directe omgeving van het systeem heeft er echter direct mee te maken en heeft daardoor een veel sterkere invloed op het gedrag en de eigenschappen ervan. Beschouw een voorbeeld van  thee kokend in een waterkoker. De thee en de waterkoker vormen samen een systeem. Als de ketel  deksel open wordt gehouden, ontsnapt stoom van de kokende thee naar de omgeving, wat een voorbeeld is van een open systeem. Als het deksel van de ketel nu gesloten is, kan de stoom niet ontsnappen, d.w.z. er kan geen materie ontsnappen, maar de energie in de vorm van warmte wordt uitgewisseld met de omgeving. Het wordt dus een gesloten systeem. Als de hete thee echter in een thermoskan wordt gegoten, kan er gedurende een bepaalde tijd geen materie of energie worden uitgewisseld met de omgeving. Dit type  systeem wordt een geïsoleerd systeem. In werkelijkheid kan geen enkel systeem oneindig geïsoleerd worden. In het geval van een thermoskan zal de thee uiteindelijk afkoelen, wat aangeeft dat er energie-uitwisseling heeft plaatsgevonden tussen het systeem en de omgeving. Wanneer de thee in de thermoskan dezelfde temperatuur bereikt als de omgeving, zijn het systeem en de omgeving in thermisch evenwicht. In de mechanica wordt evenwicht gedefinieerd door de balans tussen de krachten en de koppels in het systeem. In de thermodynamica is het echter essentieel om de warmteoverdrachtsprocessen tussen het systeem en de omgeving te bestuderen, wat leidt tot het thermische evenwicht van het systeem. Het concept van thermisch evenwicht leidt uiteindelijk tot de nulde wet van de thermodynamica. Deze wet  is eveneens toepasbaar op de verschillende delen van een gesloten systeem en vereist dat de temperatuur overal in het systeem hetzelfde is als het systeem thermisch evenwicht heeft bereikt.

A thermodynamic system is the part of the world that scientists study for its heat and energy behavior. It sits inside a surrounding environment, or surroundings. The system and the surroundings can exchange heat and do work across the boundary that separates them. The immediate surroundings affect the system most strongly because they interact with it directly.

A kettle of boiling tea shows how this works in everyday life. The tea and the kettle together form the system. If the lid is open, steam escapes into the surroundings. That makes it an open system because matter can leave.

If the lid is closed, steam cannot escape. Matter stays inside, but heat can still pass between the system and the surroundings. In that case, the kettle acts as a closed system. If the hot tea is poured into a thermos, then neither matter nor energy can be exchanged for a time. That is an isolated system.

In reality, no system stays isolated forever. The tea in the thermos will eventually cool down, which shows that energy exchange still occurred with the surroundings. When the tea and the surroundings reach the same temperature, they are in thermal equilibrium. In thermodynamics, this idea is more important than the force and torque balance used in mechanics.

Thermal equilibrium also leads to the Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics. This law applies to the different parts of a closed system as well. It states that if a system has reached thermal equilibrium, the temperature must be the same everywhere inside it.
