Cyclic Processes And Isolated Systems

A system that does not exchange heat and does no work on its surroundings is called an isolated system. The change in internal energy for such systems is zero.
In non-isolated systems, the internal energy can be constant only if the process followed is cyclic.
Suppose a thermodynamic system, like air inside the lungs, at initial pressure and volume, expanded to a new final state, returns to its initial state in a thermodynamic process. Such a process is called a cyclic process.&#160;
In this process, the internal energy of the gas remains constant; therefore, the work done equals the net heat transfer.
In a pV diagram, such a cyclic process is represented by a closed path. Suppose the work done along the first path is W1, and work done along the second path is W2. The net work done in a cyclic process is represented by the area between these two closed paths.
It is positive if the process follows a clockwise cycle and is negative when it follows a counter-clockwise cycle.

De onbekende hoeveelheid is de netto hoeveelheid werk die voor dit cyclische proces is verricht. Volgens de eerste wet van de thermodynamica is de verandering in de interne energie van het systeem het verschil tussen de netto warmteoverdracht naar het systeem en het netto werk dat door het systeem wordt verricht. Omdat de verandering in interne energie nul is, is de netto hoeveelheid verrichte arbeid gelijk aan de netto warmteoverdracht. De netto warmteoverdracht is de som van de warmteoverdracht voor elk pad, gelijk aan 40 J. Het netto verrichte werk is dus 40 J. Het netto positieve werk houdt in dat het werk dat door het systeem wordt gedaan groter is dan het werk dat op het systeem wordt gedaan. De warmte-energie die aan het systeem wordt geleverd, wordt door het systeem gebruikt bij het externe werk.

A cyclic thermodynamic process returns a system to its initial state. In a cycle, the change in internal energy is zero. An isolated system is different because it has zero heat exchange and zero work, so its internal energy stays constant.

For a non-isolated system, the internal energy change is zero only when the process is cyclic. The first law of thermodynamics relates internal energy, heat transfer, and work. It states that the change in internal energy is the difference between the net heat transferred into the system and the net work done by the system.

The example here uses a four-step cyclic process. The heat transfer along the four paths is 40 J, -80 J, -20 J, and 100 J. The question is to find the net work done for the full cycle. The net heat transfer is the sum of the heat for each step, which is 40 J.

Because the process is cyclic, the change in internal energy is zero. That means the net work done equals the net heat transfer. So the net work done is 40 J. This positive value means the system does more work than work done on it. The heat energy supplied to the system is used to do external work.
