Ademhalingsdiepte

Breathing depth and rhythm help show how a person is ventilating. Respiratory depth is the amount of air inhaled or exhaled in one breath. It may be shallow or deep, and it usually stays steady when a person is resting or asleep. A deep sigh is an automatic deep breath that fills the lungs with more air than normal breathing.

Respiratory depth is checked by watching chest excursion, or chest movement. Deep respiration shows full lung expansion and complete exhalation. Shallow respiration moves the chest less and sends less air through the lungs. Two related terms are apnea and dyspnea. Apnea is a stop in breathing that, if it lasts 4 to 6 minutes, can cause brain damage or death. Dyspnea means difficult or labored breathing, often fast and shallow, and the person may look anxious. People with dyspnea often breathe more easily while sitting upright. This is called orthopnea.

Respiratory rhythm describes the pattern of breathing. It includes timing, regularity, and effort. Diaphragmatic breathing uses the diaphragm and is often seen in healthy men and children. It is best observed by watching the abdomen move. Thoracic breathing uses thoracic muscles and is more common in women. It shows up as movement in the upper chest.

Labored respirations may also use accessory muscles in the neck. Obstructed air movement, such as from a foreign body, can cause the intercostal spaces to retract during inspiration. Prolonged exhalation is common in conditions like COPD or asthma, where air has trouble moving out. Watching both depth and rhythm helps identify changes early and guides the right response.
