Uncertainty: Overview

The uncertainty reflects the possible range of values in which the result of a measurement can exist.
However, uncertainty varies from error, which is the difference between the measured result and the true value.
For its representation, the uncertainty in a value is placed on the right of the result&#39;s magnitude, expressed in significant figures.
The significant figure is the number of digits required to express the outcome without a loss of precision. The number of significant figures includes all digits of certainty and the digits of uncertainty on its right side.
Uncertainty can be expressed in absolute and relative scales.
Absolute uncertainty is the possible margin of variation for the result in both directions. On the contrary, relative uncertainty is the ratio of absolute uncertainty to the magnitude of the result.

In de analytische chemie voeren we vaak repetitieve metingen uit om onnauwkeurigheden veroorzaakt door zowel bepaalde als onbepaalde fouten op te sporen en te minimaliseren. Ondanks de zorg die we besteden, betekent de aanwezigheid van willekeurige fouten dat herhaalde metingen bijna nooit precies dezelfde omvang hebben. Het collectieve verschil tussen deze metingen, waargenomen waarden, en de geschatte of verwachte waarde wordt onzekerheid genoemd. Onzekerheid wordt gewoonlijk na de geschatte of verwachte waarde geschreven.

Het is belangrijk om de onzekerheid uit te drukken in het juiste aantal significante cijfers, dat wil zeggen het aantal cijfers dat nodig is om de precieze uitkomst weer te geven. De omvang van mogelijke variaties van het significante cijfer in beide richtingen wordt uitgedrukt als optelling of aftrekking van het significante cijfer. De op deze manier weergegeven onzekerheid wordt absolute onzekerheid genoemd. De verhouding tussen de absolute onzekerheid en de omvang van de geschatte of verwachte waarde staat bekend als relatieve onzekerheid.

Uncertainty is part of analytical chemistry measurement. When repeated measurements are taken, random errors can cause the results to differ in small ways. These repeated values are compared with the estimated or expected value to judge how much uncertainty is present.

Uncertainty is usually written after the estimated or expected value. It should also be reported with the correct number of significant figures, which are the digits needed to show a precise result. The possible variation from the significant figure in either direction is shown with addition or subtraction. This form is called absolute uncertainty.

Relative uncertainty compares the size of the absolute uncertainty with the estimated or expected value. It is written as a ratio. Together, absolute uncertainty and relative uncertainty help describe the range in which a measured result may lie.
