Speed of a Transverse Wave

Consider a flexible taut rope in an equilibrium position with a linear mass density &#956; and a tension force T.
When a constant upward force is applied at the right end, a transverse wave travels through the rope with constant speed.
The small element of length &#916;x oscillates perpendicular to the wave motion because of the rope&#39;s restoring force.
The force at each end is tangent to the rope.
The tension forces in the x-directions have equal magnitude and opposite directions, so they cancel.
The slope of the rope at points x and x plus &#916;x determines the expressions for the y-components of the force.
Combining these expressions gives the net y-component of the force, which according to Newton&#39;s second law, equals the elements&#39; mass times the y-component of acceleration.
Dividing by T-&#916;x and taking the limit &#916;x to be zero gives the expression, in the same form as the linear wave equation.
This provides the expression for the speed of the wave, which depends on the tension and the linear density.

The speed of transverse waves on a string depends on the string’s tension and its mass per unit length. A string with more tension has stronger restoring forces. Those forces help pull the string back to straight after it is disturbed, so the wave moves faster.

Mass per unit length is the mass of a string divided by its length. It is also called linear density. Strings on a guitar can have different thicknesses even when they are made of similar material, so they can have different linear densities.

Wave speed matters for stringed musical instruments because it helps determine the frequency of the sound produced along with wavelength. It also connects to other mechanical waves, since many of them follow the same main mathematical expression as waves on a string. Wave speed is a key property of any wave.

The idea of wave speed also explains real-world events. Light waves travel much faster than sound waves in air. That is why a flash from lightning is seen before the clap of thunder is heard.

Mechanical Waves in Air, Water, and Earth

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.
