An analytical methodology has four cascading levels: technique, method, procedure, and protocol.
A technique is a scientific principle that rationalizes a specific phenomenon through chemical measurements.
A method is the adaptation of a technique for analyzing a particular sample of interest.
A procedure is a set of directions to perform the analysis.
A protocol is the strict guidelines to be adhered to while detailing the procedure.
Analytical methods can be categorized into classical and instrumental.
In classical methods, the component of interest &#8211;the analyte&#8211; is separated from the rest of the sample-matrix via wet chemical processes like precipitation, extraction, or distillation.
Alternatively, instrumental methods probe the physical properties of an analyte, such as conductivity, electrode potential, light absorption or emission, and the mass-to-charge ratio.
Analytical method selection is determined by the requirements of equipment availability, accuracy, precision, sensitivity, selectivity, robustness, ruggedness, cost, analysis time, and the scale of operation.

Een analytische methodologie kan worden onderverdeeld in vier opeenvolgende stappen: techniek, methode, procedure en protocol. Een techniek is een wetenschappelijk principe dat een specifiek fenomeen rationaliseert door middel van chemische metingen. Het aanpassen van een techniek voor het analyseren van een interessant monster wordt een methode genoemd. De procedure schetst de aanwijzingen voor het uitvoeren van de analyse via een analytische methode. Het protocol zijn de gedetailleerde richtlijnen voor de procedure, die strikt moeten worden gevolgd om de gewenste resultaten te verkrijgen.


Analytische methoden kunnen worden gecategoriseerd in klassieke en instrumentele methoden. Klassieke analytische methoden gebruiken natte chemische processen, zoals precipitatie, extractie of destillatie, om de component van belang (analyt) te scheiden van de rest van de materialen (matrix) in een monster. Instrumentele analytische methoden gebruiken instrumenten om de fysieke eigenschappen van een analyt te meten, zoals geleidbaarheid, elektrodepotentiaal, massa-tot-ladingverhouding en absorptie of emissie van licht. Een analytische methode wordt gekozen op basis van de vereiste nauwkeurigheid, precisie, gevoeligheid, selectiviteit, robuustheid, robuustheid, schaal van de operatie, analysetijd, beschikbaarheid van de apparatuur en kosten.

Analytical methods follow a clear path from technique to protocol. In analytical chemistry, a technique is the scientific principle used to explain a chemical measurement. A method applies that technique to a sample of interest.

The next steps are procedure and protocol. A procedure gives the directions for carrying out the analysis with an analytical method. A protocol is the detailed set of guidelines for that procedure, and it should be followed closely to get the desired results.

Analytical methods are also grouped into classical and instrumental methods. Classical methods use wet chemical processes, such as precipitation, extraction, or distillation, to separate the analyte, or component of interest, from the matrix, or the rest of the sample. Instrumental methods use instruments to measure physical properties such as conductivity, electrode potential, mass-to-charge ratio, and absorption or emission of light.

The best method depends on several practical factors. These include accuracy, precision, sensitivity, selectivity, robustness, ruggedness, scale of operation, analysis time, equipment availability, and cost. Choosing the right analytical method means matching the test to the goal of the analysis.
