Non-destructive Tests for Concrete Strength

Non-destructive tests, such as the rebound hammer test and penetration resistance test, can be used to determine the strength of concrete in an existing structure.
The rebound hammer, also known as the Schmidt hammer, houses a spring-loaded mass.
The hammer is held perpendicular to an even concrete surface by pressing the plunger against it, causing the spring to extend, retracting the mass.
When released, the mass rebounds from the plunger. The extent of this rebound is then measured on a scale fixed to the hammer and is called the rebound number.
The higher the value of the rebound number, the harder the concrete surface, indicating high concrete strength.
The penetration resistance test, also known as the Windsor Probe test, uses a gunlike device equipped with a triangular template with three holes.
The template is placed on the concrete surface, and probes are shot into the concrete through each of the three holes using the device.
The average of each probe&#39;s penetration through the hole is measured; the lower the penetration of the probe, the higher the strength of the concrete.

Concrete strength can be checked without fully breaking the material. Two common methods are the rebound hammer test, also called the Schmidt hammer test, and the penetration resistance test, also called the Windsor Probe test. Both are used to estimate the strength of existing concrete.

The rebound hammer test measures the hardness of the concrete surface and gives an indirect clue about strength. A spring-driven mass moves inside a tubular housing and strikes a plunger against the concrete. The mass then rebounds, and the travel distance gives a rebound number. That number can be affected by aggregates and voids under the surface, as well as by the angle of the hammer. For that reason, multiple readings are needed for better accuracy.

The penetration resistance test looks at how far probes can enter the concrete. A gunlike device fires probes through three holes in a template attached to the surface. The test makes small holes, so it slightly damages the concrete, but it is still considered a low-damage method. The deeper the probe goes, the lower the concrete strength is likely to be. The average penetration of the three probes is used to measure strength, and this method is considered more accurate than the rebound hammer because it checks material below the surface.
