In a clinical study, the subjects or participants are observed over a time interval for an event, such as death, that occurs only once.
Now, if a participant survives to time t0, its probability of death during the time interval t0 to t1 can be expressed as &#955;&#160;(t1 - t0).
This quantity is the hazard rate counted as deaths per unit time.
Consider that there are n individuals in the study. The observation of the ith individual begins at Bi and if they die, their time of death is Di. Let Ci be the time the participants are alive.
So, the time each individual is at risk of death is expressed as follows.
The hazard rate is then calculated using the following expression.
The quantity L - number of observed deaths - in the equation approximates Poisson distribution.
A higher hazard rate means more deaths occur with time, while a lower hazard rate means fewer deaths occur with time.

Hazard rate is a statistical measure that describes how event risk changes over time. It is also called the hazard function or failure rate. In survival analysis, it shows the instantaneous rate at which an event occurs, but only after the subject has not had the event yet.

From a probability view, hazard rate gives the chance that a subject will have the event in a very small time interval. That chance is conditional on surviving to the start of that interval. From a frequency view, it can also be treated as the number of events divided by the total time at risk. This makes it a normalized way to measure how often events happen over time.

The hazard rate is a function, so it can change as time passes. In some cases, it increases. In other cases, it decreases or stays constant. Researchers use this pattern to study time-to-event data in survival analysis and reliability engineering.

The cumulative hazard function is found by integrating the hazard rate over time. It shows the total risk that builds up over a period.
