Weibull and exponential models are frequently used in survival analysis.
A two-parameter Weibull distribution has a survival curve given as follows.
Here, &#946;&#160;determines the hazard function. A beta more than one indicates that the hazard rate is increasing with time with increasing risk over time t.
A beta less than one shows the hazard rate decreasing over time, and indicates a decreasing risk.
A beta equal to one indicates a constant hazard rate. This also changes the Weibull model to the exponential model, which is expressed as follows.
In the human population, a constant hazard rate is less likely over a long time period. But, it can be assumed to be constant for a short duration, such as 5 to 10 years.
If a plot of estimates of S(t) on a logarithmic scale is a straight line, using the exponential model for the survival analysis is more appropriate. This is because log S(t) = &#8331;&#955;t becomes a straight line where &#8331;&#955; is the slope.

Parametrische overlevingsanalyse modelleert overlevingsgegevens door een specifieke waarschijnlijkheidsverdeling aan te nemen voor de tijd totdat een gebeurtenis plaatsvindt. De Weibull- en exponentiële verdelingen zijn twee van de meest gebruikte methoden in deze context, vanwege hun veelzijdigheid en relatief eenvoudige toepassing.

Weibull-verdeling

De Weibull-verdeling is een flexibel model dat wordt gebruikt in parametrische overlevingsanalyse. Het kan zowel toenemende als afnemende gevarenpercentages verwerken, afhankelijk van de vormparameter ( (β)). Wanneer (β) > 1, neemt het gevarenpercentage in de loop van de tijd toe, waardoor het geschikt is voor het modelleren van processen zoals veroudering, waarbij het risico in de loop van de tijd toeneemt. Als (β) < 1, neemt het gevaar in de loop van de tijd af, wat scenario's vertegenwoordigt zoals betrouwbaarheid van machines waarbij het faalrisico afneemt na de eerste test. Exponentiële verdeling

Het exponentiële model is een eenvoudiger parametrisch overlevingsmodel en is in wezen een speciaal geval van de Weibull-verdeling met de vormparameter ((β)) vastgezet op 1. Het exponentiële model gaat uit van een constante gevarengraad in de loop van de tijd, wat betekent dat de waarschijnlijkheid dat de gebeurtenis optreedt uniform is, ongeacht hoeveel tijd er is verstreken. Dit model is minder flexibel dan het Weibull-model, maar is nuttig in situaties waarin constant risico een redelijke aanname is, zoals het modelleren van de tijd tot falen voor bepaalde mechanische systemen of apparaten.

The Weibull distribution is a flexible model in parametric survival analysis. It can describe both increasing and decreasing hazard rates, depending on its shape parameter beta. When beta is greater than 1, the hazard rate rises over time. That pattern fits aging, where risk increases with time. When beta is less than 1, the hazard rate falls over time. That pattern can fit machine reliability, where failure risk drops after initial testing.

The Weibull model is useful in medical research, engineering, and reliability studies. It can adapt to different hazard patterns, so it works well when risk does not stay the same over time.

The exponential model is a simpler parametric survival model. It is a special case of the Weibull distribution with the shape parameter beta fixed at 1. In this model, the hazard rate stays constant over time. That means the chance of the event is the same no matter how much time has passed.

The exponential model is less flexible than the Weibull model, but it is useful when constant risk is a reasonable assumption. One example is time to failure for certain mechanical systems or devices.

In practice, the choice between these models depends on the hazard function. If the hazard rate changes over time, the Weibull distribution usually gives a better fit. If the risk stays constant, the exponential model can be easier to interpret and compute. Both models help explain survival times and support decisions in healthcare, reliability engineering, and other fields.
