Approximate integration is used when the exact value of a definite integral cannot be calculated.This typically arises in two main cases: when the function's antiderivative is unknown or does not exist in a closed form, and when the function is composed of empirical data, such as a set of discrete points from an experiment, rather than a continuous formula.In such situations, definite integrals are estimated using Riemann sums, which divide the interval into n equal subintervals of width &#916;x.For each subinterval, a rectangle is constructed, with its height set by the function&#8217;s value at a specific point within that subinterval.In the left endpoint approximation Ln, each rectangle&#8217;s height is set by the function&#8217;s value at the left end.If the function is increasing, this method underestimates the area; if the function is decreasing, it overestimates.The right endpoint approximation Rn, uses the right end of each subinterval. This method overestimates the area if the function is increasing and vice versa.These methods use basic geometry&#8212;adding rectangle areas&#8212;to estimate integrals of complex or unknown functions.

Riemann sums estimate the area under a curve when an exact definite integral is hard to find. This often happens when a function has no known antiderivative or cannot be written in a closed form. It also happens when the function comes from measured data instead of a formula.

The method works by splitting the interval of integration into equal parts. Each subinterval gets a rectangle, and the rectangle height comes from the function value at one chosen point in that part. Adding the rectangle areas gives an approximate integration result.

A left endpoint approximation uses the function value at the left end of each subinterval. For an increasing function, this method usually underestimates the total area. For a decreasing function, it usually overestimates it.

A right endpoint approximation uses the function value at the right end of each subinterval. For an increasing function, it usually overestimates the area. For a decreasing function, it usually underestimates it.

These rectangle-based estimates are simple, but they are useful in numerical analysis. They are especially helpful in science and engineering when an integral must be found from discrete measurements or when symbolic integration is not practical.
