Common inorganic precipitants yield insoluble precipitates that can be used to quantify several cations and anions.
The formation of precipitates such as barium chromate can be applied to determine the cation as well as the anion.
Some precipitates, such as hydrous oxides, oxalates, and phosphates, are first converted to a weighable form.
Organic precipitants are usually more selective than their inorganic counterparts.
For example, sodium tetraphenylborate is a highly specific precipitant for potassium and ammonium ions.
Similarly, chelating agents like 8-hydroxyquinoline are commonly used for the selective precipitation of inorganic metal ions.
