Question 1

Which cranial nerves carry parasympathetic fibers from the brainstem?

Accepted Answer

Parasympathetic preganglionic fibers originate in the brainstem and exit through four cranial nerves: the oculomotor nerve (III), facial nerve (VII), glossopharyngeal nerve (IX), and vagus nerve (X). These nerves deliver parasympathetic output to structures in the head, neck, thorax, and abdomen. The vagus nerve alone accounts for approximately 75 percent of all parasympathetic outflow from the central nervous system.

Question 2

What is the role of the ciliary ganglia in parasympathetic signaling?

Accepted Answer

The ciliary ganglia receive preganglionic axons from the oculomotor nerve and send postganglionic fibers to smooth muscles in the eye. Located laterally to each optic nerve, these ganglia are positioned close to the structures they innervate, allowing for precise control of eye muscle function through parasympathetic signaling.

Question 3

How do the pterygopalatine and submandibular ganglia regulate gland secretion?

Accepted Answer

The pterygopalatine ganglia receive preganglionic fibers from the facial nerve and stimulate tear and mucus production in the lacrimal and nasal glands. The submandibular ganglia also receive facial nerve fibers and stimulate saliva production by innervating the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands. Both ganglia are located close to their target organs for efficient parasympathetic control.

Question 4

What structures does the otic ganglia innervate?

Accepted Answer

The otic ganglia receive preganglionic axons from the glossopharyngeal nerve and send postganglionic fibers to the parotid salivary gland. Situated just inferior to each foramen ovale, the otic ganglia regulate salivary secretion through parasympathetic innervation of this major salivary gland.

Question 5

What organs does the vagus nerve supply with parasympathetic innervation?

Accepted Answer

The vagus nerve reaches terminal ganglia in the thorax and abdomen, supplying parasympathetic signals to the heart, lungs, and abdominal organs. It extends as far as the distal portion of the large intestine, making it the most extensive parasympathetic pathway. This widespread distribution enables the vagus nerve to regulate multiple visceral functions throughout the body.

Question 6

Why are parasympathetic ganglia located close to their target organs?

Accepted Answer

Parasympathetic ganglia are positioned near the organs they innervate to enable efficient, localized control of visceral functions. This anatomical arrangement allows postganglionic axons to be short, facilitating precise parasympathetic regulation of specific structures. The proximity of ganglia to target tissues reflects the parasympathetic division's role in maintaining homeostasis and organ-specific responses.

Question 7

How does the parasympathetic division differ from the sympathetic division in terms of outflow?

Accepted Answer

The parasympathetic division exits the central nervous system through cranial nerves III, VII, IX, and X, plus sacral spinal nerves, providing discrete, organ-specific innervation. In contrast, the sympathetic division uses thoracolumbar spinal nerves and employs more widespread, coordinated responses. Understanding these anatomical differences helps explain why parasympathetic effects are typically localized while sympathetic effects are more generalized.
