Blood pressure — BP — is the hydrostatic pressure that blood exerts on the walls of blood vessels, typically measured in mm Hg.
In a resting adult, the highest arterial pressure — about 110 mm Hg — on the aorta and large systemic arteries is generated due to ventricular contraction. It is known as the systolic pressure.
The lowest arterial pressure — about 70 mm Hg — generated during ventricular relaxation is known as the diastolic pressure.
In the cardiovascular system, BP is highest in the arteries closer to the heart, and it reduces to 35 mm Hg when blood flows from the arteries to the arterioles and capillaries.
BP further reduces to 16 mm Hg as the blood passes from capillaries to venules and veins. It gradually decreases to 0 mm Hg when the blood returns to the heart.
The average BP in arteries is called the mean arterial pressure. It is calculated using the following equation.
For a resting adult with systolic and diastolic blood pressures of 110/70 mm Hg, the mean arterial pressure would be calculated as 83 mm Hg.
