Question 1

What happens to momentum when a cue ball strikes a stationary ball in billiards?

Accepted Answer

The cue ball transfers some of its linear momentum to the stationary ball through an impulsive force acting over a very short duration. The cue ball slows down while the struck ball begins moving. This momentum exchange demonstrates how collision forces cause immediate and substantial changes in the motion of both objects.

Question 2

When does the conservation of linear momentum apply to a system of particles?

Accepted Answer

Conservation of linear momentum applies when the sum of external impulses acting on a system of particles equals zero. Under this condition, the principle of linear impulse and momentum simplifies, showing that total momentum remains constant. This principle is commonly applied in collision and interaction scenarios where external forces are negligible.

Question 3

How do impulsive and non-impulsive forces differ in collision analysis?

Accepted Answer

Impulsive forces act briefly but cause substantial momentum changes, such as the forceful impact between colliding balls. Non-impulsive forces operate over longer periods compared to collision time, like friction between balls and the table. Though non-impulsive forces slightly affect momentum, their impact is minor compared to the transformative effect of collision forces.

Question 4

Why is the impulse from collision forces considered negligible in billiards?

Accepted Answer

The impulsive force during a billiards collision acts for an extremely short duration, making its impulse negligible relative to the momentum change it produces. This brief, intense force causes immediate and significant momentum transfer between the balls. The short timeframe allows us to focus on momentum conservation without accounting for the impulse itself.

Question 5

What role do external impulses play in momentum conservation?

Accepted Answer

External impulses determine whether momentum is conserved in a particle system. When the sum of external impulses equals zero, total momentum remains constant throughout the interaction. If external impulses are present, momentum changes proportionally. This relationship is fundamental to analyzing collisions and particle interactions in mechanical systems.

Question 6

How does friction between balls and the table affect momentum during a collision?

Accepted Answer

Friction is a non-impulsive force that operates over extended periods, much longer than the collision timeframe. Though friction subtly influences momentum over time, its impact during the collision itself is negligible compared to the impulsive collision forces. This distinction allows collision analysis to focus on momentum exchange between the balls while treating friction as a secondary effect.

Question 7

What is the relationship between impulse and momentum change in particle collisions?

Accepted Answer

Impulse, the product of force and time, directly equals the change in momentum for a particle. During collisions, impulsive forces acting over brief durations produce large momentum changes. The principle of linear impulse and momentum quantifies this relationship, showing how force duration and magnitude combine to alter a particle's motion state.
