During digestion, polysaccharides are broken down into simple sugars.
After their absorption in the GI tract, glucose is transported into other cells through GluT transporter proteins.
Additionally, the hepatocytes convert the majority of the galactose into glucose.
Once inside the cell, glucose undergoes glycolysis to produce pyruvate and ATP. Pyruvate can then follow one of several pathways.
In aerobic conditions, Pyruvate can enter the mitochondria and be converted to acetyl CoA, which enters the Krebs cycle.
This produces NADH and FADH2, ultimately leading to the production of ATP.
In anaerobic conditions, pyruvate is converted to lactate through lactic acid fermentation. This process is widely observed in overworked skeletal muscles during exercises.
Pyruvate can also be used for amino acid synthesis.
In liver and muscle cells, glucose can undergo glycogenesis and be stored as glycogen for later use.
Lastly, excess glucose is converted into triglycerides for long-term storage in adipose tissue.
