The uterus, or the womb, provides a nourishing environment for the implantation and development of a fertilized egg.

It is a hollow, pear-shaped organ in the pelvic cavity, positioned between the bladder and the rectum.

Typically, the uterus tilts forward at its base, covering the urinary bladder from the superior aspect.

The uterus is indeed supported by several ligaments, but the three primary ones are, broad ligaments, round ligaments, and uterosacral ligaments.

A non-gravid uterus measures approximately 7–8 cm in length, 5 cm in width, and 2.5 cm in thickness, though these dimensions can vary depending on age and pregnancy history.

The rounded upper portion of the uterus, above the attached uterine tubes, is called the fundus.

Under the fundus lies the body, which covers the uterine cavity. It constricts at the isthmus, inferiorly extending into the tubular cervix.

The proximal opening of the cervical canal into the uterine cavity is termed the internal os, while at the vaginal end, it is known as the external os.
